I bought my silkies from Premier Silkies and followed her feed recipe... and then my computer died so I lost that recipe.
Does anyone have it by chance? I can't remember what the ingredients were. It made a huge amount of feed so I only mixed it a few times.
I think it's high humidity. My very first hatch of a different breed resulted in curled toes on every single cockeral. I did the 50%/70% humidity hatch thing.
Ever since I've kept rhe humidity at 50% during hatch and no more curled toes.
And I've used the same curled toed birds for...

Right move but probably not enough. What you removed was encapsulated infection, chances are there is more in there. Either the bird got something under the skin and it festered or he opened the skin above the eye and it infected.
If it does not feel soft and squishy then there's more...
Has anyone ever seen this problem before? The area above my roo's eye is really swollen.
It's only the right eye. I was able to get a huge hunk of something white out of it earlier today. The stuff almost looked like wax. ????? I put some eye antibiotics in it.
Sounds like a head injury to me as well. I accidently knocked a 1x1 perch off a ledge it was sitting on(yes it should have been nailed down), anyway it hit the silkie hen in the head and we had immediate head injury symptoms. Rushed her to the vet, vet gave a shot of steroid, fluids, and she...

You do NOT want to stop the predisone suddenly. Taper it down until its gone. I read about this treatment somewhere else, I'll try to find the link and post it here. But the person who posted it had one she had to hand fed for 2 months and he fully recovered. I'm in for the long...

Back to the vet this afternoon and she was tube fed. We'll take her back tomorrow where she'll spend the day and get constant feedings and they'll show me how to tube feed her myself. sooo... hanging in there. I thought she was a gonner when I got home from work. We'll keep...
just got home from teh vets office. She got fluids, cortisone, and pain killer. She can walk but mostly stands or lays still. She's staying upright and not falling over. This pic was taken before the vet visit and she was using her wings for balance. hopefully she'll make a nice recovery...
Any experience with head injuries?
I'm sooo mad and upset. My husband didn't nail down a 1x1 roost in the pen and one fell and hit my gorgeous black/lav split hen in the head. I'm soo upset. She's still alive but is nodding her head and won't stand up. Is there ANYthing I can do to help...

thanks,
I'm beginning to think the "odd chick" is a different breed. it has a white spot on the back of the head and in looking here, some breeds do hatch with a white dot. i didn't know I had a breed that did this, but maybe the silver pencil plymouth rocks do? we'll have to see how...
Here's a mystery... time will tell I guess. lol
I hatched what I thought to be a silkie egg, and I'm still not sure it wasn't a silkie egg. Anyway, the chick that hatched from what I thought was a black silkie hen and a lavender sikie roo, hatched looking exactly like the other silkies in...

My silkies get exactly teh same food as the ameraucanas who are hatching like popcorn. I think mine is a humidity issue since I am doing staggered hatches and am raising the humidity level during the hatch phase for them. I have yet to hatch a sillkie but 4 are geting close. Friday...
