Congrats! It's a cutie! Too hard for me to guess on gender with that picture alone. Can you get a pic of its comb too? I put my Silkie chicks outside at about 2 1/2 weeks with no additional heat source and they were fine even when we had nights in the 40s. As far as crowing goes, I think it just...
Yes the roo has gold leakage. Well that will be very interesting to see yellow chicks turn blue! A couple of the chicks do have grayish/bluish parts but primarily yellow.
I've seen her very reluctantly allow the roo to get on top a few times... So I thought maybe she is getting close but didn't think she would be already... I hatched some eggs and the babies are yellow. The only ones I know for sure are laying are the black and blue hens. So, if my paint isn't...
Is it possible to have white babies from a black roo over black and blue hens? Either someone has white genes somewhere down the line or my 5 month old paint pullet is laying!
I live in WA too and have 6-7 grown silkies and Silkie babies in the brooder. They do just fine. Yes they get wet and their feet can get muddy but once they dry they are good as new again.
To keep an LGD, is it true you will need to have your entire property fenced? I just lost a Silkie to a bobcat today. Getting really tired of losing animals to all the predators around here. ... And considering getting an LGD.
Please be careful. Just this week I made a rookie mistake and put my 1-2 day old silkies with my 4-6 day old LF chicks and two little silkies got trampled and died.
I had a white male over a dark blue hen and got pure white, light buffs, and paints. As others have stated, the whites hide many genes so it's a surprise as to what you will get. Try it! It's worth finding out.
The wispy wing feathers will happen with all Silkie babies but doesn't indicate gender. They'll go thru a really funky feathering stage since they don't have regular feathers. My chicks that were platinum blonde turned out white and my 3 yellowish chicks: one turned out white, one blondish buff...
Thanks! She is a sweet girl but seems so absent minded. She gave me a huge fright the other night. I went to lock their coop door and she was the only one missing. I thought for sure the bobcat got her... So I walked around our property and I found her down in our lower field, completely...
Gender help please? I think this is probably a girl but still not sure. Almost 4 months old. She's a little bigger than the other Silkie girls her age but a little smaller than the boys. I also don't see much of a comb under her crest but one of the boys doesn't have much of one either...
