I am catching up on list reading after a long week and just now read about your loss, Redill. How sad you lost Flekka to the heat. :(

The Icie chicks are amazingly active right from hatching, so it is not at all surprising, Eleda, that you had basket jumpers. Unfortunately, I agree with RedIll, I think you have to view them as mixed breeds now.

OK, I give up! This site and my setup are NOT compatible anymore. I can still post text, but not photos. So, I have posted a series of photos of the flock on my blog. Sorry I cannot seem to get this site to work. @NotAFarm I want you to see the whole beautiful flock. Thanks again!!!!!
I have been having a terrible time with Tapatalk and this website for months. Trying the web version at the moment. We'll see if it works any better for me. :p
We are up to 6 chicks now. They are so small, compared to the chickens I have had in the past (orpingtons and brahmas). But they are...
Icelandic chicks!!! Four so far. I will try to upload photos. The date stamp on our camera is messed up. These were taken today. They didn't turn out real well because of the bright light coming through the sallyport door, but hopefully you can see the chicks to the left. I hope this works - I...
When I became interested in Icelandic chickens, my research lead me to BYC and this thread, which I read from the beginning. I am glad I did because that is how I met Mary, and how I now have such a lovely little flock. It also prepared me for what I found tonight when I got home from work.
I...
They are the most BEAUTIFUL birds! I am so thrilled to have them!! I will get photos soon. They were nervous enough width the strange lady feeding them and the new coop so I didn't want to add in flashes from the camera.
Thank you, Mary!
Lovely youngsters, NotAFarm!
It is a cold, wet morning outside today. This weekend it is going well below freezing, the highs will be below freezing. Ugh. I don't want it to be that cold yet! But. at least they aren't predicting thunderstorms with possible tornadoes!!!
As long as we don't...
No Icelandic dogs here. We have a German shepherd and an Australian cattle dog (aka blue heeler). The blue heeler is so smart he is almost human. I taught him to knock on the door when he wants to come into the house. If I don't hear him knocking, he will run around the house and up onto the...
Good morning! No snow here yet unless a few tiny flakes mixed with rain count. I hope snow that sticks will hold off awhile, as I really don't feel ready for winter yet
That is a beautiful photo of a sunrise! With the time change I won't be up for the sunrise very often for awhile. I sort of...
I thought this article was totally charming, about Icelanders and the belief in elves.

We are still working on setting up at our new place. It has required a lot of work! Our horses are settled in just fine, but the chicken run and coop are not quite ready.
I cleaned out the coop and run from the former owner's meat birds. Yuck! We put up the roost. We took a salvaged bookcase...
Jake, is your power reliable all through the winter? I don't know yet about the new place, but I frequently lost power at my old place after winter storms. I would be a bit concerned about possibly making them more susceptible to cold by adding heat that might not be there when the weather gets...
Since this is a thread about Viking chickens, and this is Columbus Day, I thought I would share this.
When I was a child, I could not understand how someone could get credited for "discovering" a place that was already inhabited by people who obviously discovered it thousands of years earlier...
So sorry to hear that you lost a chick. I hope the remaining chicks thrive. Eldur is a STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL bird. Wowzers! I am looking forward to getting the gorgeous birds! :love
