That is fantastic! Thank you! No matter how many ways I Googled it I couldn’t find those posts. I didn't look for "anomaly" though...I'm not going to hatch any more chicks this year anyway, so I'll just keep an eye on her.
I've had Icelandics for about four or five years and I remember reading a long time ago that sometimes feather problems will pop up. I thought I was immune but now I have a pullet that looks like she is going through a really bad molt. No one is feather picking her. she has looked like that...
No, both roosters are different, and I only have three hens now (one died). All the hens look alike. Everything is from the eggs I got from Mary. The roosters are first generation and the hens are first and second. I have four chicks now but it is too early to tell what they will look like. I...
I got my start from Mary, the Sheriff. The two roosters I have are from the original hatch. I suppose I should raise up another rooster or two, but after five years their fertility is still good. Two months ago I had 18 eggs split between a Silkie and my incubator. After two week of dedicated...
I've had Icelandics for five years and have never lost one to predators. They free range and I don't lock them up at night. They roost in a coop with the door open. There are coyotes, foxes, raccoons and hawks here.
I don't know why I've been so lucky. Maybe it's the dogs, a lab and a lab/chow...
They are in between a bantam and a standard chicken. Mine are not too skittish though. Here is Icelandic Elvis next to a bantam Cochin/Silkie cross hen. Elvis is a little bigger than my other Icelandic rooster.
So both of you think that is not genetic? If so, maybe I could hatch the two dozen eggs I've collected. I had planned to wait three weeks to make sure the tail-less roo wasn't the father.
Since I wasn't sure if it was genetic, and I don't need three roosters anyway so I culled him today. He is in the crock pot right now and smelling great!
Here is a pic from a different angle and you can see his breast.
He is eight months old. I thought he was a female for a long time. He has two brothers that developed male characteristics fairly quickly, while this one looked like the hens until he finally got hackles, saddle feathers and a...
What's wrong with this rooster? He never developed a tail and he is roach backed. Is it something that can happen to any breed or just Icelandics?
Here he is with his brother in the background.
I ended up with three cockerels and two pullets. I love the variety of combs and crests. I have one with a single comb, one with a rose comb
and one with a single comb that bends around to sit on his
head at a 90 degree angle.
These chicks are the hardest to photograph. I'm used to taking my Silkies and putting them in a photogenic spot and they pretty much just sit there, posing. These Icelandics are very different birds. I'll see what I can do tomorrow.
My Icelandic chicks are four weeks old now and they are certainly little bundles of energy, more vivacious than any other breed I've had. Each chick is different and there are two comb types among the six chicks. I love the diversity.
None of them appear to have abnormal feathers. Does the...
What does this feather abnormality look like? I haven't been keeping up with this thread and didn't realize there was an "issue". I had six Icelandic chicks, out of twenty four eggs, hatch yesterday. Had I known about this I wouldn't have bought the eggs.
