Denise: congratulations
I can't imagine ever getting bored of seeing that first pip, zip and hatch, no matter how many times I saw it. I think the anxiety adds to the thrill when it does work out fine in the end.
I also, having now done it, don't think i'll ever look at an egg the same way...
The 2 day olds all seem to copy each other - one goes for a drink and makes a certain peeping noise and the rest run to join it. The more recently hatched ones just sit there.
We buried chick 17 next to the tulips. DD sang a nursery rhyme (funeral songs aren't really in her repetoire) and she...
Tamara: Could it be your andalusion hadn't learned where the food and water was yet (and the yolk was all used up) - just like the timing might be right for that, and as I said, I'm a bit paranoid that they haven't all figured it out yet.
Think I might go back through now and dip each ones...
The chick I was thinking about culling just died
I don't think he was in pain particularly.
Its sad, but solves that problem I guess.
Now I can clean the incubator etc.
I'm more than happy with the 16 healthy chicks I have.
Sigh.
Onwards and upwards...on to the next hatch.

Wow!
How big must horses eggs be?

Sounds like dorm rooms or something...can just see a few hens sneaking into the roos coop late at night giggling and roos throwing stones at the hen's house to get them to come out for a little rendezvous...
When are setting your new eggs...
Kybra: sorry about the losses. Glad one made it out alive. Have you found it a friend from somewhere? Poor thing.
Julie: Wow...lots of chicks! No idea if the ameraucana/wyandotte will be laced but sure is cute. I love how ameraucanas have those fluffed cheeks. I have a right bully chick...
JJ: I think I'd've popped out to TSC or somewhere and got some day old chicks and slipped them under your broody. Always seems unfair on them to have wasted their time..
Sorry though. Better luck next time.
Tamara: good...I LOVE LOVE LOVE BLRWs. One of the shrink wrapped ones was also a...
Ok, here they are - everybody except the 4 in the incubator still hatching.
Might need some help identifying some of the colors:
Black Copper Maran, Blue Laced Red Wyandotte (anyone confirm that?) and Red Laced White Cornish
Cochins - I think the one on the right is a blue. Could the...
Maybe she'll be a splash - ?
I just that duck!
I will take pictures shortly.
I think our total tally will be 16. The recovery ward in the incubator is doing fine but think I'll leave them there until tonight.
More shrink wrapping this morning.
Don't know if its from original event, or problems with the incubator or what. Humidity is 75%, but they're still drying out
I think we're on the final stretch though. Have half helped another 4 this morning (taken half the eggshell and membrane off...
Congrats on the pip Kybra!
on the shrink wrapping. I'm so glad I checked them though.
Pleased to report all 3 shrink wrapped chicks are now out and fine. Phew. :weee:ya
The BCM really struggled and came out backwards in the end, but its out. I was really worried about that one as I tore a...
They are just gorgeous. They are so fluffy!
My favourite is the Andalusian on the right
I'm trying to work out if one of mine is a BLRW. It does look like that.
Latest update: one of the ones I rescued from shrink wrap has hatched itself out fully now. Its still attached to the egg by a...
Yes, I'm actually English - grew up in Southampton, lived last decade or so in and then near Cambridge. DH is American. Our daughter has dual nationality. We moved over here nearly 2 years ago now.
I will stay up to 1am and see how they are at that point. Worried about taking them out to...
Sorry, me again
When a chick has absorbed the yolk and all the membrane blood vessels close down, as long as it can breathe can it just sit in the egg? What would make it die?
In other words, I think the two I released the heads from the shrink wrapped membranes won't be ready to hatch for at...
I think my crisis may have passed...the chick I helped out is running around in there happily yelling its head off. The two I got their heads out are resting, breathing and cheeping normally. Their membranes are damp, I can see so will leave them like that until their blood vessels in the...
I went ahead and pulled some shell of the partially zipped one. It had looked fine at the zip site but when I got under the membrane I found it was shrink wrapped
I wet it with a warm damp cloth, peeled it back until the chick as able to get its head out on its own then put it back in the...
My blue jersey giant died in its shell.
I knew something wasn't right. It pipped early hours of this morning and nothing since.
The chicks rolled it upside down and I wonder if thats what did it. I opened the egg and he looked like he'd tried to turn around from where he'd been pipping...
