After several weeks of egg-per-day laying by our three guinea hens, laying has completely stopped. Happened the day after our evening temps dropped to below 55. We found it odd as the chickens are still laying, even with a few of them starting to go through molt. They've always laid in the...
My pit bull never messed with the guineas, but would chase the chickens. A friend's mini-doxie went straight-away after the guineas but treads lightly around the chickens. Never can tell with dogs! haha
Mine are now 16 weeks old. I worked for a vet that practices avian medicine as well as livestock - he's the one that said plain layer ration is fine for guineas, because most of their diet will actually come from ranging on plants, bugs, etc - the feed is actually just a backup (he used the...
Now that ours are out and about with the other chickens, they eat layer ration and make up for the extra protein needed in all the bugs they eat. Since we turned ours out, we've not seen hide or hair of a tick or beetle on any of us or our animals. They span out, all five of them, in a line...
My personal opinion is to keep them separated, as their rations/feed should be higher in protein than the average chick starter/grower. I had my keets on a mix of MannaPro Game Bird starter/grower mixed with Farmer's Helper Game Bird protein supplement - ratio of 5:1, respectively. My chicks...
Guineas are a game bird - chicken are domesticated poultry. Guineas make a lot of noise, both males and females - but I've never heard a guinea crow like a chicken. Maybe the others here have more to add to this. :)
Royal purples are SO gorgeous! We have the pearl grays. :-)
I noticed two of my guineas getting "randy" the other day - both with the other guineas as well as one of my hens (she was thoroughly not impressed and promptly pecked him good). They're only 12 weeks old - is this normal for that...
They're doing great! Yes, they're still very young, only about 11 weekers :)
As for yours that you're missing, they may be setting a nest - that's my hope for you anyway. Thanks for letting me know about the grouping thing - I was always figuring "birds of a feather flock together" LOL
Ours are out and about with the flock now - they LOVE it! The head rooster even follows them around like, "what do we do, George? What do we do?" LOL!!!
Starling, so very sorry to hear about your losses. :(
I've still got all 5 of my pearls, they're in the coop in the introduction pen (caged area under the poo boards) so the whole flock can get acquainted. They'll be in there for about 4 more weeks...and they do NOT like it. I was changing...
I've got two OEGB hens that are using the buddy system on a batch of 10-12 eggs as we speak. They're due to hatch out in a week, give or take a couple of days. It'll be interesting to see the little ones react to having two moms. :-)
There's a thread on here somewhere for auctions of eggs/chicks, you can probably run a search for it...I know Stromberg's (one of this site's sponsors) sells turkey.
I had to share this here with you all, as it was the funniest thing I've ever seen/experienced...
We were headed into town yesterday, and came to a property where they have a few turkeys and guineas running around. They like to get in the road on occasion, but have always moved when they hear...
