Thanks! I see you're from Houston, and I agree that I would probably open it up a bit more too.
Mainly, it was to almost completely block off any strong air movement while still allowing fresh air to cycle through.
Although they still go out and about when it gets frigid, I did it more...

Thanks for the reply!
I stained/waterproofed every bit of the walls, at least two coats I believe. This is why those boards look a little more cedar-like -- probably the color we used. The overhang of the roof works put pretty well to keep water off, as well. If I remember right, the...

Above is an older thread I saw about the issue.
I really think it depends on where you live and what their policies are.
My county only does reevaluation every 6 years, I believe, so nothing had changed. Ours is supposed to be...

On the big coop I used metal roofing from Triad Corrugated Metal in Asheboro.
I think for the painted metal roofing, color matched screws, ridge cap, and necessary items it was $150 or less.
They are a great company from what I gather, so I highly recommend them if you can get it from...

Thanks! It's nothing too special, but will be a very handy side coop to seclude birds if I need to for hatching, quarantine, etc.
I'm already getting more eggs now that my egg-eating hen is out of the main coop. I really want to get all the Silkies in there before long and see if...
Thank goodness I finally got a good chance to finish the side coop. Had to move out one sex-link hen, the frizzle Cochin rooster, and the OE rooster to the new coop partition. Hopefully when I get some sold I can let some hatching take place there. I already have two Cochin hens that have been...

Thanks. Feel free to post up questions, constructive criticism, or PM me if you're interested in anything particular.
I think there's always things you might do differently, if you had to do it over or had more time to complete, but I've been pretty happy overall, to be honest...
Well, since I've slacked off a ton going through the winter and now it's getting warmer, I should be able to get the "love shack" done here before too long. Hopefully in time to drop some of my breeds or get a hold of a mate or two for individual birds I have for spring and chick-a-mania.
Guess...
Messed with some little additions for fun inside the big coop...
Hung feeders and waterers
Hang out ledge up high
Banty/young birds feeder or safety
Lowered door for the winter months -- with windows closed and such a small opening, I think they are keeping plenty warm!

Thanks, we really appreciate the comments.
As far as anything I (Jared) would have done differently...that is really hard to say.
The design of the coop was based upon the location in the back yard and just grew from there.
Because I don't think there is a right design or wrong design...

I've given some to my folks and have a coworker wanting some.
But I really need to put them up for sale or something. I've already gotten a ton of eggs...and when all the girls get to laying age, we'll probably have AT LEAST a carton of eggs a day the majority of days of the week.

Oh yeah!
We've actually been getting 3-4 eggs a day pretty regular for the past handful of weeks, luckily.
The other day, out of the 6 chickens that are probably laying (3 being banties), we got 5 eggs in one day.
Soooo...we've got about 4 cartons of eggs sitting in the fridge already...
