Well... my Gunnar kids are 20 weeks old... figured it was time for some pics... Some were more cooperative than others... Dweezil was NOT in a photogenic mood today and he's usually so inquisitive... go figure. So... 2 cockerels... Vacker and Dweezil... and 4 pullets... Dharma, Serenity, Harmony...

Good to know. Yes, humidity is quite a problem here... especially where the chickens live. The elevation on my property varies a lot and over the last two weeks we have not seen the sun until 10:30 or 11 in the morning due to the extremely heavy fog. We are "wet" every day until noon... that's...

Sorry you have not gotten responses. Many of us do not have breeding pens set up right now... many breeding pens were broken down for the summer as it is just too hot to ship eggs and chicks. I have just now divided my SFH in trios (Vacker with his girls, and Dweezil with his girls) - yes I have...

I hatched 7 out of 12 shipped eggs from BDM last spring... not a great percentage in general but apparently not bad for SFH. I am going to hatch some in Jan before I begin shipping just to assure egg quality.

Hmm... and I have thought all along that mine were a little smaller. Although they vary in size a lot more than my other breeds. Vacker is larger than my other cockerel Dweezil... Vacker is about the same size as the Rhodebar pullets who are the same age. Then I do have one runt... Willow. As a...

Just like with my Rhodebars... I put SFH in the freezer this year. I have learned from other breeds of livestock that if you really want improvement the best way to do it is to cull deeply and keep only the best. Breeding them all is not the best way to get the highest number of quality animals...

If he were the only SFH roo I had and I felt I had to use him, I'd make sure I bred him to a hen with lots of flowers. I am not sure he has enough varying flowers to be classified as a SFH... but that would be for someone else to say. Where is that line? not sure...

Interesting... my SFH eggs are what I would classify as medium. The HRIR eggs are very large. The only birds I have which lay smaller eggs than the SFH are the d'Uccles. But my HRIR are much larger birds than my SFH. So are my SFH eggs smaller than usual, or the HRIR larger than usual?
