My roo died, along with a hen, of some random issue. Totally weird. Hatched out a mess of chicks, and I'm hanging onto them to see who is what...hubby says why do you want more chickens? but you can't have too many SFH! I put more in the incubator a few days ago to see what else we can get...

I might. One of my roos looks to be sick, and I suspect cardiac disease :( I came home from my VA trip to find him just off, and he isn't improving. And I would love to add some ladies, as I must separate out my EE hens...the ones that were supposed to lay blue eggs...nope. A couple of them lay...

One of my SFH strolled through the house today.

Well, VA chicken peeps...I'll be making my annual trip to Staunton in a couple weeks. I could swap eggs with someone on the way...

I'm thinking about setting 18-20 SFH eggs tomorrow, eggs I've collected over the last week that we haven't eaten. I did the NYD hatch a long and then decided maybe I shouldn't set any more until it's less likely to storm...good thing, as we have lost power several times for a long enough period...

My understanding is all the imports have come from different sources. The latest import apparently came from a farm that was selecting for larger eggs. this may have happened. I do suspect that the hatch rate as well as predator pressure probably minimized most double crested birds from...

I have a crested hen I got from GFF that lays a creamy white egg. It isn't white like that of a Leghorn, but it is not tan colored. I set 6 eggs from a crestedxcrested cross on accident for the NYD hatch...I didn't know which hen was laying large, beautiful creamy-white eggs. Half didn't...

I'm calling two places a couple hours away tomorrow...I don't want to keep them any longer than I have to! They ran through the neighbor's yard today. I'm going to tweak the electric fence again and see why it isn't keeping them in. I have feed for 12 more days, but if they go somewhere before...

I'd be getting plenty of SFH eggs now if the hogs would stop getting out and heading straight to the coop to eat the eggs and clean their feeders. Local slaughter house had to push our date back to March 18, because they got horribly backed up with the nasty weather we had here. Haven't had...

Well, dad is a crested white and red splash. Mom is probably a very pale tan, very light and quite pretty, with many white flowers, no crest. Could explain why chick #1 is white. Can't explain why the crest is so big though...dad has a small crest, mom has none. My crested hen lays very...

We are all hanging on to all the pullets and hens we can get, in general. I'm not too far from Hapless and might have some chicks in the spring. I'm waiting for mine to start laying again consistently, have one person who wants eggs, then I can start setting and hatching.

IME, nope. Half the fun is seeing how they turn out. I have had black chicks end up red or white, and yellow chicks end up red or tan. Half the fun of the breed ;)

I actually don't live too far from Hapless, so if you, TurnipTruck, need a delivery, I could haul a boy from this area to Upper Marlboro to meet you again.

Well, it's the only bird, out of over 100, that I have lost to a hawk. It did make me wonder. Her crest was quite large and very poofy. She was cute, but I had tagged her to be careful breeding. I wouldn't do crested on crested because of the vaulted skulls resulting in decreased hatchability...

M My opinion is a crest is too big if it impedes their vision. I had one pullet that had almost a mushroom cap shaped crest....she was caught by a hawk.

I'm seeing $35/bird for young stock, when you can find them. I wouldn't pay more than $20 for a 2 year old hen.

You know, knowing how you keep birds and how I keep them, we have always heard its a lack of ventilation, too high a humidity, that causes frostbite. I now question that. But I'm still not going to heat my coops. The risk of fire, to me, is too high. How about just plain COLD? I hope it's...

Boo. I think my youngest roo is going to lose most of his comb to frostbite, courtesy of that polar vortex. He is kind of a loner, sleeps on the end of the roost and took the brunt of the wind the night it was at its worst, when it was -20 to -35 here, and ripped the front plastic I had nailed...
