Hi all. I have not kept SFH for a few years, but the breed is still a favorite of mine. Question, is anyone breeding birds for larger crests? I remember reading not many folks are breeding Crested X Crested stock for fear of making them more prone to predation, how has this worked out? On...

His color is really interesting, have you hatched anymore like him?

True. And there lies the conundrum. Do we allow the trait to continue as it very well may have for generations in the past? Or do we breed these birds to our "standards of perfection" and cull against the trait, considering it a fault instead. Food for thought...

Sprigs are a fault in any breed with a single comb and should not be propagated. Culling against them is the surest way to remove the trait from a line.

The color of these birds isn't genetically Chocolate or even Dun, it's simply an expression of the wildtype gene commonly found in many breeds that are patterned.

Is he a SFH? He looks a lot like a Mille Leghorn... shape/type, white earlobes? I'd love to see some updated pictures to see how he has changed colorwise though.

Is anyone breeding crested Flowers together, in hopes of actually increasing the size of the crest on these birds? I think a SFH with a big, poofy Polish-like crest would be gorgeous! ETA: Anyone have any pictures of their birds with larger crests?

Amy, he does look Chocolate. Or Dun maybe? I would hang on to that one and grow him out just to see what he ends up like.

Mottled Javas would probably work well for an outcross too, they're around the same size, single combs and yellow skin. I personally wouldn't outcross to anything that doesn't have yellow skin.

I think it's so weird that her crest is Black, because she has Blue feathers on other parts of her body... genetically that should be impossible... because her crest/head should have been diluted to Blue too, or so I thought. Maybe her head is just really dark Blue. I really like her though. I...

I love Arlene too Miriam, I just wish she didn't have little crooked toes. We tried splinting them when she was a baby but we didn't have any luck straightening them out. I'd love to see pictures of the Wheaties and their eggs! I still have about a dozen hens from my Wheaten flock but I sold...

I love little Sookie and Pam, at first I was a bit disappointed because they aren't as colorful as the rest but what they lack in hue they make up in personality! They are quirky little buggers. I use a Canon something, I'll have to look at the camera to see what it is for sure. I bought it on...

Some new pictures of my babies. Arlene, my crooked toe pullet. Jessica and her fantastic crest. Does anyone have a mature hen that looks like Jessica??? I have no idea what she is going to look like all grown up. Lafayette, my only cockerel, Pam and Sookie, they're almost...

I need to get some updated pictures of my bunch that hatched on New Year's Day. They're all growing like weeds and are very pretty. I have 1 cockerel and 4 pullets, 2 with crests (including my cockerel Lafayette) and 3 that don't have crests. They're so full of personality!

I honestly can't decide which one I like more, I guess I'll need eggs sired by both! LOL! They're both awesome.

Mr. Crooked Toes is definitely a he. Whatever breed he is he is Blue Wheaten, the way he has feathered out is how the boys do. The hens are a pretty wheat color. He almost looks like a Cubalaya to me? I'd say he's definitely not a SFH.
