Hello, straight to answers, yes they are cold hardy. Egg production will vary depending on genetics and light. Just like any other chicken with putting bk at night, they'll go in on their own if they are raised or kept in the coop for a couple weeks.
Hello All, anyone close or in CT interested in purchasing my Blue Sumatra flock? I've decided to part with the blues. I need more coop space for separating out black Sumatras. I can try shipping the birds in a few weeks when it cools down a bit but I've never actually shipped. And it is VERY...
This is a very interesting subject you brought up but you may have more luck in the general forum on another thread, not in this breed specific thread. Let me know where you post, if you do so I could follow. Thanks and I hope you get some good answers.
Thank you Gamebirds only! Sumatras seem extremely popular with the judges the past couple years. I have literally won Best AOSB at both shows I've been to this Spring and a couple last year.
Trying to catch up here, it's been awhile since I've logged on. I went to the Central Maine Poultry show this past weekend and did well with my Sumatras. AOSB. There was one other guy with 5 Sumatras himself that looked pretty good also.
The black roo is prob just under 2 years and the blue roo just over 2 years, maybe closer to 3 years so they definitely aren't too old to breed. What would be a good breeder ration? I give them reg layer pellets and weekly bread, veggies, and scrambled eggs. Should I add higher protein chick...
Hello all, has anyone had fertility issues with the Sumatra breed? I have had them for about 3 years and I've been hatching pretty much since I got them. Starting last fall I stopped getting fertile eggs from both of my Sumatras Roosters. I thought it was just a phase with the cold weather and...
No insult at all. I like breeding to standard whether it be for showing or just keeping the bird up to par rather than mutting it down. But either way the blue is definitely a fascinating color. I like to promote buying from small time breeders and showers rather then the big hatcheries. Some...
Hello and welcome to the thread!
Regardless of the quality I think your blues are beautiful. Blue is such a fascinating color for chickens. Ill be showing a few of my blues at the Poultry Congress in Massachusetts next month. Here's a couple pics of what I'm bringing along.
Anyone else here...
My first question is do you or will you have an incubator? On that note, if you do not have one or plan to get one, my advice is to get one. What you may not realize is that the worse the quality of the birds, the more you will have to hatch and the longer it will take. You state that your...
I have to chime in. You state "Those "not sumatras" would have to have been crossed with BLRW or RIR because the breeder doesn't hatch mixes on purpose." So because they were unintentional they are not crosses? It is a crossed project bird. Is there an entire flock that breeds true to Sumatra...
I would recommend getting one of those havahart traps and just always keep it set next to the coop.it will catch and/or distract them. You can either dispose or relocate if you prefer but I wouldn't recommend that, they can always find their way back. Better in a live trap than in your coop...
I don't know you said they're sensitive but simply put, they have peacombs and no wattles. That's the first thing that tells you they won't get frost bite. They are a pretty gamey wild breed and thick plumage so I'd say 100% they are cold hardy without a doubt.
I'm parting with 2 Sumatra roos if there is anyone nearby CT or MA that's interested. Very good quality birds. I don't have pics at the moment but can post when I have time to get out there and take a couple. PM if interested. I will be bringing them to Little Rhody on Sunday. Thanks,
