All three of my Sumatra's are very friendly. They all come when called and jump up on a roost when I tell them to. I can pick up each of them with out a fuss, lay then on their backs, and spread their wings and play with their feet. I don't find them to be an aggressive or flighty breed. However...
I was wondering if Sumatra's are one of the breeds that carry a lethal gene. My breeding stalk is healthy I only incubate good quality eggs, never wait long then 7 days before the eggs go in the incubator. So far I have had 98% fertility rate, Every egg that is fertile full develops then the...
Thank you. I am calling the Female on the far right (Blue Splash) because she has another big black patch like that on her other side. I am hoping breeding her to my splach will give me some more like her with even more black patches on them and some white.
They are bantam size I think. Its hard to compare tem to my moms large fowl because she has meat birds. The girl with the black mark on her chest is a definite Bantam size, and smaller then the others a little bit because of problems during hatching but other wise she seems fine :)
This is my rooster Rannoch and his two girls Harlequin and Cupcake. They are all friendly especially my rooster who loves to just sit on my arm. He is just over 6 months old today. I have two hens the same age. I am located in British Columbia. I was wondering when my hens will start laying?
I too would like to know when I can expect my girls to start laying. My are only 15 week and my roo is starting to crow and keep the girls close to him, one of them never leaves his side. He hasn't tried to mount them yet though

Yes, his saddle feathers are in now. I need to get some recent photos of him :) His tail is also coming in nicely. Compared to y other two Heritage Breeds, I find that Sumatra roosters mature faster. Despite everything I have been told about all Heritage breeds matter slowly.
this is a photo I took of my Roo a few weeks back when is tail was a bit shorter still. He looked more like a hen here, but you can really see his splash colouring :)
I have a young beautiful Trio of Sumatra's I plan on breeding and trying to get "Splash" as a recognized colour for the breed. My birds are all hand tamed and my roo, and one of the hens are trained to fly up on my arm on command. I am trying to find a show class or an event some where close by...
