Think it's too cold for your chickens? Think again...

Crazy Pennsylvania weather...... High of 25 Monday, 50's Tues. and Wed. highs in the 20's tomorrow, even colder after that. I let them out for a while today, and they got a little wet. Hope they are dry before the freezing temps hit tomorrow morn. I threw extra straw in. I do feel confident they...

Half of mine came out today and decided to hang out under the deck. The other four weren't too interested in coming out of the coop. Wasn't hard to get them back in.

My girls seemed unaffected by the cold. They are hanging in the coop even though the run is open, the wind picked up recently.

We did put Vaseline on the comb and wattles this evening. Just in case. Here's a pic of the lovely weather we are having!

They forecasted 5 tonight, but it usually gets colder at our house than what they say. Windchill is going to be 20 to 30 below. Thinking about putting Vaseline on the combs of the BA and BRs. The EEs and GLWs should be okay.

It's going to get down to zero this week. I added extra straw in the coop.

We are near 60* today! The girls are now all muddy! Maybe it will keep them warm tomorrow when its back to the 30's, lol.

They don't seem to be. They are in their run most of the day, in and out. My coop is kind of tall, (shed conversion), so I was lucky I had a BIL who puts up rain gutter for a living. The long boxes were perfect. I tacked them in with small nails, and used old thirsts to fill in the gaps at the...

I insulated with cardboard and later wrapped a cheap tarp around 2 sides. More for my piece of mind, than anything. That and the fact I found 8x10 tarps for $3.50 at a discount store!

Near zero this morning. They were still eager to go in the run. They haven't tried to run me over to free range since we got a foot of snow.

I meant I went out and prepared for the zero degree temps we are supposed to get since it was 30 out......

I worked on warming up the coop a bit yesterday, since it was close to 30 degrees out. We are set to have a cold snap, so I tarped up the outside, except for the one window, and changed to a higher watt bulb for the morning light, hoping it will warm it up a bit. More for my piece of mind, than...

I don't do a lot of scraps, just veggies as long as they aren't too salty, and occassionally popcorn, the hot air popped kind. When I do give them extras, its never more than a cup or two, and its nearly gone as soon as it hits the ground, ha ha. (8 hens)

It's already up on bricks. It seems like it would be easier to spill if it were hanging and swinging?

I can't get the girls to stop spilling their water, am worried about the coop being damp. They seem to be healthy sofar.

We just have a small 25 watt bulb in there for light. Was considering putting a 60 or 90 when it gets to zero, but so afraid of something catching on fire! Tonight the low is supposed to be around 13, I will check on them early in the morning. They haven't "looked" cold yet this winter, their...
