Looks like it is a cockerel? I had two of those this year from an outside source, both turned out to be cockerels with too much color on the breasts. They will be sold to the meat guy when old enough. I hope their sisters will not reproduce this! (will have to cull HARD with those).
That is cool. I did not know he had new stock. I am only a few miles away and raise a different line than he does - blocky and broader back and shoulders. Of course I am working on a number of things!
I live only a few miles from David. I have contacted him before when I got interested in Marans and had some questions. But he never could say where he got them from? Nice guy though, but I passed the birds on. He does try to keep the price reasonable.
I am in Murrayville, next door to...
WOW Walt - that would be great... very generous of you and Mr. Ovalle. Mr. Ovalle is also the director in the west for the MCC (Bev Davs' club).
Thanks... hope you guys can pull it off.
I agree... the barn must be built before it can be painted.
But good thing about the marans is that we can start to cull by the color of the egg, then type (clean legged chick, obvious defects, etc) then color and type as the bird grows. I realize it does take a long term commitment to get...
I have a rooster that is black on the breast , I have only 3 marans hens - all solid black, that being said - half of his pullets showed copper. I havent had a cockerel by him that I would consider keeping though.
