1. Is it possible that a marans hen does not carry feathered shank gene?
2. Has anyone noticed or have feedback on a slow--feather shank? My Cockerel has feathered (albeit sparsely) shanks but my hen does not. He was not born with the clear feathering I see on photos here in the forum.

Well he danced for 3 pullets yesterday and then took off for one in particular who was quick to oblige him. I don't think at 15 weeks those girls are close to laying but wouldn't hurt my feelings if they did.
When did your cockerel start displaying his dominance? Mine just turned 14 weeks and has found himself chasing a few pullets and even getting one to submit though she isn't laying eggs yet. Not sure if this is a normal timeframe or if there's an early bloomer here.

I'm impressed by how the chicks (9 weeks) will go up into their coop in the evening without prompting. They free range most of the daylight hours and I usually get them a treat to lead them back in before dusk so they are in a run. It's probably the easiest thing I do all day lol. Mealworms...
