Is that Bayhorsebonnie line? I have it written down in some file on my old computer lol. I will have to look. BUT, I hatched a BTB from the Bayhorsebonnie so that must be in there as well if its the same person. Nice large BCMs hens from that line with nice big dark brown/red eggs. I have them...

Mine almost never molt out mossiness. In my lines if they are mossy as a chick they are almost always mossy as an adult and its cull city lol. Important to keep records of your flocks/the traits of the birds you are working with and keep that flock closed for several years so you have a better...

Trust me, egg color has as much to do with the color of egg the males/fathers came from as much as the one the mother/female hen is laying. Try breeding an uber dark #9 laying hen back to a male from a light egg. You will see loss of egg color in the daughters immediately.

I wouldn't keep him for breeding. Too many things wrong. If you want him for a pet you could keep him. I have several pet roosters that are big ol sweeties I usually get more attached to my hens than my roos but there are definitely some exceptions lol.

My mossy girl is not the darkest layer at all. I have darker girls (as in a bit over-melanized girls) who lay the very very darkest eggs...

I kept one of mine that turned out to be over melanized (with mahogany saddles and hackle feathers-not the eyes). I kept him because he is huge and major eye candy lol. I just like looking at him running around in my yard, he's such a big ole' sweetie too. He makes nice olive eggers.

Sounds like they are still a little young. Roos that age still have a ton of growing and filling out to do and hormones will be kicking in even more. Their eyes should be turning normal color by around 5 mos at least. I have had some that took quite a while for all their coppering to come in...

I hope you get good coloring on your next batch. Okay now I am intrigued about your one footed roo. Do you mean he is crippled or actually lost his foot? Reason I ask is (this is a little OT) because I have this half grown roo chick that apparently something happened to one of his legs cuz he...

You must post pics of your blue birchens when they start coloring up :) I loved mine (eggs that I purchased) but gave up on them due to the male showing mahogany in the wing. I am starting a new birchen project with the black birchen female I have and pure blue males or perhaps lavender marans...

Nothing wrong with a few speckles :P I have a solid blue Marans hen that lays speckled eggs. I love them. They are the 4 larger speckled ones in this photo on the right..

The only broodies I have left right now are ducks, key west, and one silkie who already has been sitting for 24 days so I took her eggs. She went and gathered up some more as soon as the other hens laid theirs and sat back down again grrr. I am letting my darkest laying bcms get accustomed to...

I'd mate him to a good sized girl with good shank/toe feathering and a low tail. Also with good hackle coppering. Oh yeah, and she has to lay dark too :P Where can we order some of those? I'll have a double lol!

I can't really see all of his leg/outer toe feathering but I like his really nice big body. Looks like his chest is dark and his copper is even, like that! I agree on the tail being a little high from the angle the photo is taken. Sometimes with the tail at a high angle, it just makes the back...

Pretty aprons on your girls! I just bought a bunch of new bright pretty colors of material to make my girls some new ones. Some of the black and blue copper girls got so big and fat now that their old ones don't fit anymore lol. There is a lot of roo loving going on around here because of our...

Very cute boys Lisa!! I also love little cockerals they always have so much more personality than most of the girls lol. My cuckoo marans boys are like a bunch of kittens the way they play and act. Sometimes one will jump out at me and each other from behind a tree then run away. They aren't...

The difference is mostly due to genetics. Some of the varieties that lay darker in general are Black and Blue coppers. The silver cuckoos in general tend to lay light with all the other varieties being in between. This will vary between breeders. Some people think it varies between specific...

I have roos with black breasts and copper ear lobes and decent shank/outer toe feathering and from uber dark eggs. One of the sons of one of the black breasted has just a few flecks of copper in his chest and also from dark egg gened parents. My main problem is that many of these roos also have...

I am envious of your Brabanters they are so cool looking! Good to know about the egg to feed ratio too. Yes keep them locked up tight. What's up with all these critters being so bold lately?? I don't think some of the hens I had, that got taken by foxes were even really scared of the fox. It...
