Who knows where the barn gets their chicks from. I've never had chicks shipped and don't plan on doing that. I prefer getting them local too. There are some breeds I want though that I may not be able to find locally. I've given them my 2 cents on this breed so maybe if enough people bring it to...
I had another talk with the people I bought the pair of BCM's from that I think we all agree don't really look like your typical BCM's.
They say the one on the left is actually an olive egger even though she doesn't have a pea comb. The one on the right they still say is a BCM even though...
Well it turns out they didn't get them from the breeder I thought they did so don't know where they got them from or what other breeds they breed. I contacted the breeder in my state and she said she didn't have a BCM Roo anymore so doesn't have chicks available but the farm I got mine from...
I think I figured out why my "black copper marans" doesn't look quite right. I did some investigative work and I think I found the name of the breeder (I got my chicks from a local farm who gets their chicks from various breeders). There's only one BCM breeder that I could find in the state and...
Hmm yes @ochochicas I got these from Baxter Barn and they were $12 a piece and they claimed "our Black Copper breeders originated from Bev Davis and Wade Jeane lines". I'll wait till they get a little older and maybe contact them. I hope they still lay some dark eggs for me.
@magdelaine one of my chicks showed some copper fuzz on her sides when she was just days old too. They change a lot when their feathers come out. It's hard to predict what they will look like when they are only days old.
Baxter Barn in WA is where I got my chicks. They advertise on Craigslist and have a website but not many pics of their chicks/chickens. They put up a new ad every week as that is how often they get new chicks: http://seattle.craigslist.org/est/grq/4687970895.html
I had to look up mottled. Yeah it does look like that on her front but her back feathers and tail are completely black and she has a couple wing feathers that are completely white. Quite a lot of white on her face too. That's ok, I like unique. :)
@magdelaine Wasn't really sure of the differences but looked up pics of cuckoo marans and they seem to have a lot more white specks on them. Maybe a cross between the two? Also cuckoo marans don't seem to have feathery legs.
All my chicks are supposed to be pullets but I know they are sometimes wrong and if they are they say they will take back any cockerels which is good cuz I don't really want any. I hadn't heard that the mossy ones lay darker eggs. That would be nice.
My other BCM is the total opposite. Not a...
One of my black copper marans chicks seems to be getting more and more copper in places there shouldn't be. She's only going to be used for egg production so I guess I shouldn't be too worried about it but the farm I got her from stated their BCM's come from Bev Davis and Wade Jeane lines which...
Are these the fastest growing breed? Can't believe how fast they are growing! I have a couple easter egger chicks of the same age and they are tiny in comparison. One of my one week old chicks is already getting her comb! At least she's supposed to be a girl. Here's her one week bday pic. Since...
