Thanks! Pretty geese! If the baby has a saddle, does that mean that one of the parents is masking a spot gene? Is Marshmello the Sebastopol? Sorry for my excessive curiosity. Someday I'd love to try crossing a brown Chinese with a Sebastopol, so I'm really interested in understanding/observing...
Hi everyone!
I have a question. My Sebastopol goose has made a nest, and has so far got 3 eggs in it!! We have had a really warm spell in the weather recently (high of 60s), but the predicted weather for this coming weekend is seriously cold (single digits!). That's Vermont! :) My question is...
The flirting, as much as I have noticed, is a pre-mating thing for mine. His response is usually to mount her! Yeah, I would think yours would be showing some interest. Mine mated their first spring (at about 9 months old) -- though they weren't terribly good at it at first. I don't know why he...
Wow! Lots of broody birds! :) Yeah, mine "flirt" something like that. I've only noticed my female doing it during mating season, so maybe it's a clue. I don't really know. The rest of the time, if there's gentle nibbling or biting, it seems to be the male saying "You're in my space!" -- more...
Hi Lacrystol,
I am no expert, but have you tried "voice sexing" your boy? Although, I think you said he's pretty quiet, so that might be difficult. :) My pair have very different voices. She "whispers" and makes deeper grunting noises when she's munching grass. He tends to make higher pitched...
Sounds like fun!! I'd love to see pics on here of any Sebastopol babies! (I'd love to see pictures of the others too!! But this is supposed to be a Sebastopol thread...don't know how much that matters.) :) I miss my geese being babies. Hoping for some goslings next spring, Lord willing.
ibejaran, have you found this? https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/491013/goose-incubation-hatching-guide-completed
I haven't actually incubated any goose eggs, but I thought this post was amazing!! I hope your eggs hatch! Have fun! Yeah, I'm a sucker for babies too.
Yeah, I don't know if Lavender is show-acceptable or not. I completely understand what you mean about show-quality birds. Mine are pet-quality (I think.), but if I ever got serious about breeding them, I think I would at least add some better blood into my flock and breed up. My birds came from...
I hope you find some! I'm new to them myself. I have a pair, and they are my first geese, but I am enjoying them tons! They're such fun and great entertainment.
Hi everybody!
I got my first geese last summer--a pair of Sebastopols! She's laying now, and I'm just curious...could any of you give me a ball park for the average weight of Sebastopol eggs? I've heard that yearling eggs are often under-sized, and I'd like to get an idea of what's "normal."
