Hello all! I just wanted to share a story with a happy ending here. I had a broody Black Sex Link, and after a couple of weeks, I decided to give her some fertile eggs to hatch.
One day I came home from work, and she was on the wrong nest, and the eggs were cold. So I plopped her back on...
You have about a 48 hour window from the time the first one hatches. If you can find some locally, that would be ideal. If not, she can raise just 2. It's not ideal, but it will work.
Thanks! I just went out and checked again and all is good in the hood! The Mamas are both now clucking to the chicks ad they have popped out and climbed on top of th girls etc.
It's so funny because the Silkie is probably 8 years old and she had been broody before but never given chicks. I...
Love reading about the broodies!
For those of you who have grafted newly hatched chicks onto broodies, if they don't accept them, does it usually happen right away?
I just snuck some freshly hatched chicks from my incubator under my two hens. One has been a successful broody before, and the...
Aw congrats! I have a few broodies sitting on eggs, and I have a full incubator too. I am going to snea a bunch under my girls too. Fingers crossed!

If the other chickens cannot see her, than yes, you will have to reintegrate down the road.
Sounds like a plan. I thought my...
I hadn't heard of that app, thank you! I just downloaded it. I have a feeling it will come in handy for the future.
Congrats! Please keep us updated!
No problem. You may hear peeps on day 20, but don't get too worried. My first time broody took a couple days longer to hatch out some eggs.
Whenever I have broodies, I always keep them with the flock. It is chancy this way, if the Mama doesn't guard them well or is a submissive hen, the babies can get pecked by the other chickens. It depends when she will take them out, but it is usually a couple days at least. When I had a hen...
This is the best part, and the hardest part! Hope she has lots of little chicks. It is so much fun to watch her taking them around and showing them the world.
Wowza! That's a lot!
Okay guys, might have some pics tomorrow. Last night my broody had. Two chickies under her! Six more eggs left. Fingers crossed! :D

My broody girl Cinnamon is due to hatch out her eggs today. No peeps yet when I checked on her this morning. Hopefully by tomorrow she will have some chicks!
