@PD-Riverman that is quite the set up. I have some scrap lumber that I was going to use to make a second coop for brooding. I like the idea of having separate pens for broodies, DH may not be so happy when he realizes how many chicks we will have running around.
@fisherlady Dillon is clearly...
I have a camera in the coop, but I can't figure out when she left the nest, and since I refocused the camera in the afternoon (before I knew she wasn't in the nest) I can't figure out when she got into the other nest!
You just can't win, no matter how much technology you use.
I think that I...
I finally put some eggs under my broody Bielefelder hen. She sat on them for two days, but today when I went to collect eggs, she was in a different nest box. Since there was a new egg in with the fertilized eggs, I assume that another hen got into the nest when she was out and when she came...
@fisherlady Congrats on your broodys! Based on the photos, you don't isolate the Broody and chicks? I love seeing Laverne out with her chicks in the middle of the flock! I have only let the family out when the chicks were 3 weeks old, and it was a real nuisance to keep them separated inside the...
@nchls school Yes, this is the Bielefelder hen. I am going to put her in the dog crate today. I just haven't had a chance to set it up. Not sure that I have room inside the coop, can I set her up in the run under the roof and against the side of the coop? It is predator proof and dry. Temps...
I covered her favorite nest boxes last night, but of course she settled for another one. She did leave the nest this morning and was out with the flock. When she went back into the coop, another hen as in the box. So she sat on the coop floor patiently waiting.If I was feeling sympathetic then...
hahaha, My Bielefelder hen, originally called Clueless and then changed to Schnitzel, is once again Clueless!
She has decided to be partly broody - going to have to put her in one of the box thingies... but first I'll try taking her out of the nest box all day.
Did I mention that she...
@snlconner so sorry to hear this. Hopefully it will work out next time. Seems like either incubated or Broody, sometimes you just can't win.
Better luck next time.
@fisherlady , those are such cute pix! I spy on my broody hen and chicks with a Nest cam - yup, Nest is the cam from Google. How convenient is that??? I get see the chicks scrambling about and popping their heads out from everywhere! She has become a playground.
@PD-Riverman You will be happy to know that I didn't move her after Day 18. Up until then it was once a day. I figured that moving her towards the end was a bad idea!
@PD-Riverman , I read that taking them out once a day to eat and drink was alright, and she didn't fuss at all, so I continued. She is in very good health. I've also heard that if you leave them on the nest and they don't eat or drink, their condition deteriorates. Have you had this happen?
I...
I could use some advice on when to move the new mom and babies. I am not happy with the set up right now. I put an old dog crate in the coop around her nest box, but once the hatch is done how long do I have to wait?
