Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Thought I'd post an update on my babies. They are two weeks old this today and Thursday. They are so stinkin' cute but it's different for me since my first three depended on me as "mommy." These two run to my barred rock, Mabel. Loving watching them grow and Mabel take care of them. Been...

I have two babies so far! Myrtie & Alice. I'm staying with my ancestor theme and naming my new chicks after my Great g-mas. They are so cute! I lost one egg that got tossled around. I think the chick was already dead because the yolk hadn't been absorbed. We'll see if anymore hatch!

My new baby seems to be doing good. Except Mabel (Momma) keeps pecking her at times. I'm not sure if she's scolding her to get under her or what? She talks to the new baby a lot, too. I was going to throw away the rest of the eggs this morning and decided to move Mabel & baby down to the...

Thanks Johnn, I was thinking I would wait until mid-day when it is warmer. I'm in the Sierra Nevada foothills in California and it's cooler this morning. I figure it needs to be warmer just in case one has hatched or is pipping. I don't hear any peeping at all, is that normal?

Today is day 21 for me. I went to open up the coop. I checked on my broody, but I did not here any peeping. I'm afraid to move her since she is in a sideways bucket and it's tight. It disturbs the eggs when I pull her out of there. Poor thing is so hungry. I keep food & water right beside...

Oh how cute! Mine should begin hatching today but most likely tomorrow! I'm so excited I can hardly wait. I have to go to a wedding late this afternoon about 50 miles away and I'm bumming because I'd rather be here. You know you're a chicken addict when....... LOL!

Thanks, Bobbiechicks! We did candle them last night. From what I can tell through my inexperience, 5-6 of the 17 have dark spots I'm assuming are the embryos. Some looked empty but I hesitate to throw them out yet and none smell bad yet. I only 6 days left so we'll see what happens. Why...

Help????? I was a little under the weather yesterday and therefore didn't check on my broody quite as much as normally do. She is 7 days away from day 21. She was somehow got off the nest and couldn't get back on. The door closed and shut her out. I don't know for how long. I checked her...
