I don't know that I would leave the blue eggs. That will be two days later than the others. She will want to wait at least a couple days after the first ones hatch to take the chicks out, thereby leaving the other eggs that haven't hatched or she will wait on the two other eggs because she can...
If it's possible, in the position of the black's nest, perhaps you can construct some kind of separator, be it fencing or whatever. This is where separation is handy. However, moving the nest may not work so well, it might cause your black to stop brooding. Your red hen is higher on the...
Sounds like you're doing ok on the humidity. Another thing you might try is wetting the shell around the pipping chick so that it can absorb a little moisture. Be careful not to get any water in the pip-hole. Basically just wet your fingers and smear the shell with that water.
Helping them...
I've had success moving a broody by building a wooden box with a door on hinges and a lock.
I'll get the box all set up where I want it, then get the hen and move her, put her in, put eggs under her and lock the door. This is done at night while she cannot see. I leave her locked in the box...
Sounds like your old rooster may not be around much longer. Rehoming him would be extremely stressful for him. Can you make a separate area for him a few of his old favorite hens? That way he could live out his last days "at home" without being beat up by a youngun'
Might you have rats or snakes? I lost several eggs from underneath a broody too! She started with 6. Come hatch day, only one hatched and that was the only egg in the nest. She was in her own pen too. I know she didn't eat them and I know we had a snake in the barn. I let it stay so it...
I did have a broody. Her eggs were due today, actually tonight. However, one hatched the night before last, one pipped and died and the third one that was left of 6 died quite a while ago.
She did not accept the baby that did hatch so we had an orphan in the house. Thankfully, I found...
In my experience, a lot depends upon the mama's position in the social order. If she's always been a lower ranked bird, she may try to defend her babies and not be successful. Although most broody mamas are a force to be reconned with, some of them just don't have what it takes. These, I...
How about electric fencing Johnn?
Being locked in a pen might not make your girls very happy but it certainly wouldn't kill them. I think your friend might be wrong about the fox. If a fox gets in the coop, where the birds cannot get away, it would kill them all but your birds are out and...
