Jason,
Wow.. It must be happening because he has no fear of humans. His dad is NOT like that at all. None of his brother are either, but I never handle my males. I want them to be stand-offish of me.
Do not handle him at all. If you want to re-establish dominance, take a stick (or broom ;) )...
It's 52 here right now. I'm cold today as well. It's all about acclimation!
Wearing my jacket inside. If I'm not active, I get cold easily. Just do some chores and then sit down and watch them :D
Good sign! I encourage crows. They will gang up against hawks/eagles/buzzards
My moms do this too! I always wondered why they were trying to incubate their food dishes :gig
How old is she? I mean.. I know McChicken is a girl.. And she looks just like her! McChicken was broody raised as well. By Pearl - who looks identical to Topsy! As the cutest chick ever made :P Foster Mama. She is 1/2 polish 1/2 sizzle
They can move eggs... Saw this video here that proves it :) Also noticed the same thing happen with my hens. Especially when the nesting boxes were at ground level like the ones in the video.
Yes. She is teaching them she is to be respected I believe. I see this at about 5 weeks.. Right around the time they start laying. However, my 'chicks' are now 15 weeks old, and mama has full opportunity to go back to her regular flock, yet she sticks with her kids. It's adorable :love
Your silkie mix looks like my smooth sizzles.
:) I don't always hear peeping after they pip. Usually only when they zip or right before they pip. Hardly ever hear it under a broody. The other chickens are far too noisy :P
It's not that bad at all. However, if it is indeed a bird of prey, it won't stop them.
They will get over being contained within a week. I have done it with extra roosters. They were very upset for 3 or 4 days and are now over it.
Yes.. They tend to take a lot. My friend lost 25 birds and 3 were left.. One was injured, one had not come back to the coop to roost, so she wasn't even close to the attack, and one was hidden enough to be left behind.
They left no traces. Not even feathers.
I have a working dog who watches the birds, but she is not fully free ranging with them yet.. I have not lost a single bird yet. I have been researching birds of prey - you've heard "know your enemies".. We don't have many large birds of prey. The Northern Goshawk is the biggest BOP. They weigh...
I am so sorry Johnn! :hit
Fox is my guess. They take the entire bird without leaving traces. I hope it was quick.:hugs
My suggestion would be to invest in a Livestock guardian dog, or another livestock guardian type animal (Llamas and Donkeys work well). Though a LGD will easily dissuade a...
