Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

My silky is fond of making a new nest under the coop. Big pain in the butt, each night I scooped up the babies and her and tossed them inside the coop overnight. Usually by the fourth night she took them in herself. Perhaps she would be fine under there without my intervention, but we get all...

Maybe that's the key if you set up a special area for them and they feel secure there then there's no reason to move. Mine nest where they feel like it, usually in a nestbox, and eventually move to the floor with their chicks. The one time I set up a special broody area just for broodies the...

Haha, thank you, but I always think it's disgustingly dirty. :sick I use Sweet PDZ glandular horse stall freshener for the base on the floor and scoop the poop daily with a cat litter scoop. I also rake it from time to time to bring the PDZ back to the top. Then twice a year I clean it all...

They grow up so fast. Here are the five week old Olive Eggers and Easter Eggers along with the six week old White Leghorns playing in the coop. My favorite EE is the light colored girl in the last pic. You can see the two WL boys are getting very red combs already. Caught them fighting...

I've never had a SF but I've read they are gentle by nature. Sounds like she's doing the same thing my silky momma does. You could give them a treat of scrambled eggs or dried meal worms, or even put a small dish of chick starter in with them to nibble on. It will give her something to show...

I give it until day 25 to toss anything not hatched, candle first if you aren't sure. Usually the broody will get rid of all duds, but not always. My latest broody was a RIR and I was convinced her eggs were all duds on day 22. I now have 3 WL chicks running around that she hatched.

The reason you need to do something fast is because usually by the third day after hatching the momma will take all chicks with her and leave the nest for a new nest area. Yes, two at a time is fine. I've never waited any length of time between putting eggs or chicks under my broodies. I've...

Has he crowed yet? Do you have any other roosters? If he hasn't crowed and you have other Roos I'd say it's a rooster who isn't high in the pecking order. And Roxanne is probably lower in the pecking order. Most of my roosters have crowed by 8 weeks old, but a few didn't crow until they were...

Wish I would have taken my camera or phone out to the coop at lock up. All four EE babies and the three WL babies were lined up roosting on the perches of the top nest boxes. Lol. They are still small enough I'm sure they think it's great. I'm just glad the RIR isn't in the nest boxes...

For the girls, I call it teens when they are still pullets and are in the time that they have feathered out but are not yet laying. Once they start laying they are hens. Boys are teens from the time they first start to dabble in crowing until they have made it to the stage of able to dominate...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I just let my broodies and chicks go wherever they please. They usually dust bathe in the ash pile or by the tree stumps. I love to watch the bigs and littles in the yard together, and I've noticed that there are stages to their exploring. For the first week the chicks stick to momma on the...

Awh. Gotta love the cockerels. They get so creative in their teenage years.

It happens sometimes. Sorry. Didolan's suggestion is a possibility. There are several factors that influence viability in eggs. Glad you had one hatch so far, hoping the rest hatch just fine.

You may have had an outside invader in your coop. Maybe a mouse or snake? Check for that. Broodies will often eat eggs that are not developing, but losing a bunch at once isn't usual. Losing one egg at a time I'd attribute to broodies being hungry and eating the duds. A broody doesn't care...

You could secure it for a couple of days, but she will move them herself within a few days and they usually stay tight under the moms.
