They should be vaccinated when they are a day old. There is a lot of information out there about vaccinating, if you google it I'm sure you'll get the information that you need.

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Glad to hear all is going well. I thought that my one broody that has been sitting for almost 4 weeks now had finally given up, she's had plenty of fertile eggs (she keeps stealing them) but if one hatched, I didn't see it. Well, she decided she wasn't done, so now she has new fertile eggs...

I find that the cock birds are very accommodating with chicks. My hens/pullets will attack a chick if they feel like it, but I've never seen one of my males go after a chick...ever.

I don't separate my broodies from the flock as a rule. When they raise the chicks with the rest of the big girls, the chicks are automatically integrated into the flock. There are several different thoughts about which direction is best, you need to do what works for you and your flock.

Wait until either she leaves or day 23 at the earliest. I usually just wait until they leave the nest unless the chick isn't eating or drinking.

I think they gain strength faster when they have each other. Glad it is working out for you. Let me know if there are any more issues with them...I have a vast amount of experience in brooder raising chicks.

I'll see what I can find as far as heating pads. Mine is an old one...maybe get one at a garage sale or from a family member that is older and keeps things. In the meantime, I'll see if I can't find a brand for you. I probably wouldn't use this broody again for any eggs that I really wanted...

I wouldn't wait too long to put the three of them together if you are going to brood them yourself. Most of my chicks are brooder raised, so I have quite a bit of experience in this realm (much more than with a broody hen). I would give the broody one more shot, but this is how I would do it...

I think I said before that I don't like to rescue chicks...but sometimes you just have to, especially if they are a breed/variety that you've been trying so hard to get. So, the only other thing that I do....don't slap me for saying this...is take away the struggling chick from the mother that...

I find that late hatchers are usually pretty weak when they finally do hatch. However, I've also noticed that they catch up. So, if it a breed that you really want, it might be worthwhile to work with them to see if they make it. Sometimes, no matter what you do they just don't thrive. I...

Came home from vacation to a broody hen that has who knows how many eggs under her. The house sitter said that she hasn't found any eggs in the laying box for at least 2 weeks.... x 3 a day makes for a really big clutch under her! I think it is probably too late to do anything about it now and...

Looks like mine is leaving her three week old chick....definitely hasn't learned to roost yet. Roosting seems to be an instinctive thing. I have 14 that I raised in the brooder and they all roost at 8 weeks old. Most of my adults don't roost....go figure.

I agree, my brahmas are seasonal brooders....spring and fall. Rarely anything in between....although there is usually one that just has to be different than the rest!

I only have LF brahmas. I haven't had one break an egg yet, but I've heard that they do. The only thing that I notice about my brahmas is that they are really good brooders, but not spectacular mothers. I rarely have one that will go all out trying to protect their young. They kind of...

Broody left the nest today for her constitutional, so I got a good look at the nest after candling last night. Only seven eggs, which is what I counted when I candled (plus two non starters, which I removed). So, we have mysteriously disappearing eggs...I had sort of hoped that the missing...

Just candled the eggs under my broody - day 14. Only found 9 of them, probably a few under her wings or have done the mysterious disappearing act. Seven are developing, I took away the two that aren't because I want to replace them tomorrow with the two in the incubator that are due on the...

Most pullets that are just for laying purposes I sell for $10 (4 months old) or $20 (already laying). But remember, it is all based on what the market will bear. There isn't much of a market around here for my Brahmas, people want heavy layers and Brahmas only lay 4-5 eggs a week. I would...

I've used a paper (cardboard) box in the past when all else failed. They usually only need it for about a week if the ramp is low, 2 weeks if it is a pretty big ramp.

They are best stored between 50-70 degrees. A fridge is a little colder than that. It won't kill the fertilization, but it isn't the best solution either. Although, many folks hatch out fertile eggs fromTrader Joes and those have been refrigerated and are probably well over the 10 day optimal...
