Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

This pic is an improvement over yesterday where princess was sitting ON TOP of the other chicken. I'll have to get a shot of that if she does it again. I don't need all these broodies, but she's so tiny I put up with her. :)

Here's my latest group of 'co-broodies'. Have had two other pairs this year - both cobrooded chicks with no problems - this one is even better because princess (the little araucana) has decided she MUST stay in the same nest box with my much larger easter egger. They only have three eggs to sit...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I've done it both this year and last year - never had a problem, but that was with hatched chicks, placed under the hen the same day they hatched. The shipped ones, even in the dark, didn't want to stay under a mama. And this morning when they were standing and peeping in the middle of the...

Anyone have a problem 'grafting' *shipped* chicks under a broody? I hatch in my bator all the time and throw those chicks under my broodies with no problems, but just got six shipped chicks yesterday for my two broodies and had no luck with either chicken, even one who is normally one of my 'go...

hatched out some california white chicks yesterday - these were miracle chicks as most of the eggs were cracked due to shipping.. So they didn't go under the broodies until after hatch. Put most under my gigantic langshan and the rest under my EE mutt - and so far so good! One sacrificial chick...

The video is a little small (taken with my phone) but here's princess the broody araucana with her babies and a watermelon. :P

YAY! My little princess accepted the chicks. Had to move her into a cat carrier tho as I have an evil RIR pullet in the same coop that kept trying to peck them. Evil RIR might have to go anyways, she keeps trying to mount the others like a rooster (and yes, she's a she - even lays eggs..). The...

Gave two newborn chicks to my broody araucana Princess tonight. This is her last chance to take the chicks or she's getting nuthin! She pecked at them a bit, but appeared to be pecking them back under her so I am hopeful.

Argh! What do you do with a bad broody who insists on staying broody? My little 6 month old has been broody for 5 weeks now. I tried giving her chicks, no dice. Tried giving her eggs - today they were pipped and one hour later one pipped egg was missing so I can only assume that she or another...

I snuck two chick filled eggs (day 18) under my broody last night and removed the fake eggs. So we'll see on Saturday-ish if they hatch and if she'll take them! :) I have another chicken that's broody now, but she's been broody once already this year and I know she'll probably take whatever I...

My little broody would not take chicks last time I hatched em, probably because she was not broody long enough. I'll have more chicks this w/e and poor thing is still broody. Think I would have a better chance of her taking the chicks if I stuck a few of the eggs under her at 'lockdown' and let...

Yuh, well, good luck with that.. 'her' rooster hasn't realized he's a dude yet. :P He did attempt to crow this morning, so maybe he'll be interested in the ladies soon.

Naw, she's definitely exhibiting broody behaviour - screeching, poofing, yelling at chickens that come near 'her' spot.. Plus when she does get up she runs around like a tiny turkey screeching hahaha.. but I am almost positive that was her egg today. I was wondering why I was getting so many...

I *think* I know why my Princess would not take the chick.. She's been glued to that nest box for almost two weeks, just getting out to puff and screech at everyone and run back - just like a broody.. stays in the nest box at night, too.. But I caught her today - she's still laying eggs! Maybe...

Well my broody experiment didn't work out. Thankfully tho, no chicks were harmed. I went back to the coop after she had the chick for about six hours and it was wandering around the coop peeping loudly while she was on the nest. She didn't seem concerned so I think she's not 'into' chicks yet...

So far so good. She's a tiny hen and the coop is very noisy (I have multiple fans going due to the heat) but I 'saw' her broody clucking a bit and the chick is still under her and alive. She poofed up and tried to beak me when I checked so I am keeping my fingers crossed. :)

I have chicks hatching today out of the incubator - was planning to give them away, but now that I have a broody..... Hmm. Princess the baby araucana has only been broody for less than two weeks, but it's worked for me before so will try giving her a chick very early AM tomorrow (When still...

Here is my little broody Princess.. She went broody in a 'temporary' nest box I had set up on the floor when one pullet was laying eggs there instead of the fancy one I bought them. :) The RIR on the left is the same age but she's not broody yet. :P

I didn't think I was getting bantam eggs when she hatched out on NYD, but she's little. All pancaked she's about the size of my hand with fingers spread. =) I'm hatching next week so it will be almost two weeks - I may put one chick under her and see if she'll take it. Here she is before...
