I just put food and water in the coop for the first couple weeks until the chicks are big enough to navigate to the outside stuff....but mine isn't 3 ft up either.
I only wait 1-3 days for the broody to stick to put eggs under. For chicks it's probably a good idea to wait 2-3 weeks, though. I've been doing chicks this summer but now my source isn't hatching any more so i bought some fertile eggs from him yesterday because I have two more broodies (one is a...
I'm really sorry this happened, too. I did it exactly how you did and also had 2 casualties. But I had 28 (so far) make it just fine. Some hens take awhile to get the hang of it. and sometimes chicks die. It's the hardest part. Poor kids and poor you!
Last night I put 14 chicks under 2 brooders who were on golf balls (none of their eggs were viable--had some explosions because I didn't candle. Next year I'll do better.) Anyway, this morning when I checked, there were four peeping chicks on the floor! They were all dark, so the same mom was...
My last two broodies were both on dud-clutches. My rooster has fertility issues--or he's a snob--or he's just so big that most of the hens run away from him. Anyway, I plan to keep a couple roos from this year's hatches. I have three chicks from him and 13 from a friend that two of my other...
I agree with Jude--this has been my experience, too. I have one very large rooster who is wonderful with the chicks. He even shares food with them. He's nicer than some of the hens. I've had three broodies raising chicks this year without a problem. The mamas know how to protect and defend...
I have one that's on 7 who was due Wednesday (still no hatchlings) and another broody who is on 11 and due this weekend. SO hard to wait!! I don't candle, either. I smell something rotten, but they're both on lockdown so I can't check.
Mine start in a nesting box, then mama and babies come down and make a nest in the deep litter on the floor where I have a food/water station set up for them (which the rest of the flock uses, too, even though they have their own outside. Opportunists!) I'm on my third broody with chicks and it...
OK so I don't know what you are doing--I didn't understand about the cream cheese container. Can you post a pic or describe it in detail please? Why are you using it? Thank you!!
For my broodies I serve scrambled eggs every third day or so. At first serving, they look at me like it's poison and I'm invading their space. Now when I bring them in, they get all excited and gobble them down. The chicks love them, too, even at days old. I just do a soft-scramble so they're...
Yes she will--she doesn't know how to count days (or eggs or chicks) but what I did was get some week-old chicks from a local breeder and swapped them out for the eggs one night. My broody purred and fluffed out over them and she's been a great mama to them for three weeks now. I had another...
Came home from work to my first home-hatched chick! Not due until tomorrow--here's hoping more of the other six under her are still going to hatch. SO MUCH FUN!!!
Okay, Thanks, Roxanne--that's what I was wondering. The two black orps (a year May 1) are very accommodating but the younger (Aug 1) hens aren't so much. And he's young (Aug 1) so I think progress is good but we're not quite there yet.
