Welcome to the country life... it just might grow on you. Seeing that you found BYC website.. it most likely will grow on you as everyone here are chicken enablers.
I am from the city too... one year on a farm and I am stuck out here in the country for the rest of my life. I love it!
I have updated the first two posts of this thread. Please if you have a chance review them, especially the FAQs and PM me with anything you guys think should be added to help others get started. Thanks everyone!
I wonder if I made a really small nest box hole if it would keep more then on hen getting in there... to help with broodies? any thoughts on designing nest box so a broody will be left alone?
Yes I will lol. I am very excited I love these breeds. I think I.. dare I say it.. like ducks more then chickens now.. LOL. Miss Lydia hope to see you at chickenstock. You bringing anything to sale? I might have some mealworms and hatching eggs.. doubt any babies though.
Wow I am amazed at how many people agree with me in beleiving broodies are the way to raise poultry. :-) this thread had really bloomed and help a lot of people, thanks everyone!
Misslydia, I think sophie started laying yesterday... yay! Also I got two new beautiful welsh harlequins that are...
Thanks lydia. I will give that a try. Lets hope it works I haven't had no luck this year. Do you candle your eggs or will the hen push the bad ones out?
I have a broody brahma. She failed on her first hatch because she flew into another side of the barn and couldn't get back. Should I trim her wings and try again or will she be ok on the other side with all the other hens? I worry about letting her hatch over there because what if they lay in...

Unfortunately I cracked and opened the eggs to check for fertillity and development because I thought being cold over night they would have been dead. Most had viens. I'm gonna try again soon.

My broody brahma jumped over my half door where she was on eggs to my other room and then couldn't get back and the eggs got cold. Almost all of them were developing too. I think I am going to let her try again. How many eggs should I put under her?
Ok, I really got to work on my patients. Plus I am having to slow down some of my breeding on my chickens because I have almost 30 now! Check out my updated flock list in my signature. :-)
PS: How long do they lay during the year? Until what month? Also do you know how long muscovies...
