Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Has Cochine been broody for at least a week? Many hens that have just started brooding will not accept chicks and may even kill them as intruders. Consider moving Bar, chicks, and nest to a safer location where other birds won't cause problems. Once there's a chick or two, hens will accept being...

Candling this morning shows the small clutch of call eggs to be internally pipped. Most of the clutch was lost to severe weather, but four eggs survived.

The best of luck to you! I should be having more call ducklings hatching soon; best of luck to me too.

They are good at hiding their nests. Found a nest under a tarp draped on the back wall of the pigeon loft. I left the eggs in the hopes the huge hen will brood-looks to be an orpington, but not positive-a new flock member..

Yes, it certainly has. Only three?? This will take some thought; two serama brooding, serama eggs under one and coturnix quail eggs under the other; cochin brooding sultan/phoenix cross eggs; muscovy brooding her own; wild turkey brooding 9 of her own and 4 domestic turkey eggs; two phoenix...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

About all you can do is separate them; it's what I do. I've found that having young poultry near brooding poultry results in poor or no hatch. I've a hen who left her eggs to "care" for chicks that are between 6 and 8 weeks old, because they kept sleeping in her nest. This morning the hen came...

My advice is to candle the eggs to verify they are still viable. If you're unsure in candling possibly you know someone that is good at it. If the eggs were put under the hen at the same time it is likely the hatch is complete, but candling is still a good idea before tossing the eggs. Hatching...

Another possible way is to check her after dark; for some hens this works, but not all. You might find her protective behavior less when she can't see.

Wonderful pictures! My serama are doing much the same as to going broody, but because of the tiny size I've been bringing them into the house. Our winter has been quite mild with day-time temperatures in the 50s and 60s. Good luck with your babies-good luck to me too!

The eggs have hatched-two died in the shell and another died a few days later. Three are still alive. The chicks are very fragile; looking like a bumble bee. Mom and chicks are now living in our bath tub where it is warm. I check them every little while-if they fall on their back, they are...

He's a serama bantam. All the serama roosters I have had have been good with chicks, but this is the first one to be so attentive while the hen is brooding.

Oddly enough, the little rooster spends most of his time sitting on the edge of the tub. The hen has six eggs; I'm wondering what the rooster's reaction will be when the eggs hatch. I have several broody hens already. Everybody will be brooding turkey eggs.
