Oh, will definately post pic when I get them. You all have been wonderful answering my questions! I thank you so very much. I'm sure more questions are to come!! This has been exciting and overwhelming at the same time
Thanks for the advice. My daughter just said the chick is entirely out of the shell now. I assume once it is dry and fluffed out(how long does that take?) It will start walking around? We have a regular chicken water jug in there with the red base, I have read that the chicks will throw...
She is very patient with us (silkie hen), more so with my oldest daughter. I don't allow the girls to touch the egg just lift her up to see how big the hole is. Its a silkie egg and the hole is about the size of a nickle so hopefully it will make it out soon. Thanks for your reply.
So, the crack in the egg wasn't anything, but the hole is the pip? Can you tell this is the first time hatching? Does it hurt the egg/chick if we lift up the hen slightly to look at the eggs progress? I'm so impatient and trying very hard not to be!!
So, whats the longest this takes? Last night we could hear the chick peeping inside the egg and there was a crack in the egg. Now 19 hours later my daughter says there is a small hole in the egg and it is still pecking and peeping. It sounds strong, when should I start to worry?
LOL, I keep saying I will leave it alone but I just can't help myself!!! Curiosity gets the best of me...... I've got an 8 hour meeting tomorrow and it is going to be the longest day ever if that little chick has not hatched before I leave home in the morning!!!!!
Does it hurt the chick if you pull it out from under the hen once it has cracked (before I noticed it was cracked of course) then put it right back under her???? First hatch, I'm so nervous!!!!
Well, on my way home from work tonight my oldest daughter called and said she could hear the chick peeping inside the egg!!! I got home and can certainly hear peeping and there is a crack in the egg!
I keep saying I'm going to leave her alone and not look anymore, but I just can't. Tonight she got really cranky with me and actually pecked at me and the flashlight so I think she has had enough and is trying to warn me to "look and not touch". She'll get a break tomorrow cause I have to work...
This wait for the chick to hatch is going to drive me insane. I keep going downstairs to look. I'm sure I'm driving the hen nuts too.. I'm not the most patient person and we thought yesterday was day 21. I'm sure we were wrong on the date. Air sac is slanted, no internal pip as of last check.
I guess if I would have actually done some thinking I should have been able to figure this out... My DD keeps worrying that she is getting sick and I keep reassuring her that she is fine, she is eating/drinking without a problem and that she just needs to be left alone to do her "work"...
First broody hen also, actually first time attempting hatch at all. Question: Is it normal for the broody hen to loose feathers on the underbelly while sitting on the egg?
Well, we thought the 10th was day 21, but my oldest daughter now says she thinks it could have been the 20th or 21st of Dec that our hen decided to stay sitting on the egg. We did candle the egg last night and the air sac is slanted but couldn't see any movement anywhere so also did the float...
X2
And sure she will! She's got her snug.gle, and her DS, right?
Yep, snuggie and DS kept her busy out there for about 2 1/2 hours. She is a little "chicken" herself so had to come back inside.
Thanks everyone! And love seeing pictures of everyones mommas and little peeps. They are so cute!
Had to post this pic. This is my youngest keeping Big Momma company.
Not sure she'll last out there until the 10th!
Moved Big Momma and her egg into the garage today. Took her about 10 minutes to check out the new area and start sitting again. She appears to like it, just hope the frequent movement in the garage doesn't bother her!
Trying to place a picture of her in here, we'll see if it works!
Thanks lswatson111304, that's what I wanted to hear. Moving day tomorrow, she is only sitting on one egg so hopefully in a few weeks we'll have a baby chick!
