With some hens even lifting them does travel all the chicks. I can move my hens and after I put them down a tiny beak will appear from out of the feathers somewhere, so be aware that even if you pick up a broody, it may still be holding on to chicks under its wings
Wow! Most I've had is 3 Broodies per nest. But mine seem to do that okay with that. I just leave them be and a few days after the last one hatches all the girls are out and about still trying to steal the chicks of each other. By about 2 weeks the babies have each picked which hen they prefer.
Sometimes the chicks from the first few eggs layed are a little smaller as adults, but they are usually still perfectly healthy. The hens will continue to lay fertitlized eggs for at least 21 days after the rooster passes away and can still be laying some fertitlized eggs 35 days later
After having 3 mums co hatch a set of eggs I now have 3 more Broodies, each in their own box, so I have 3 eggs each with them. Will see how many more I get have hatch, hopefully another 9 as I gave them the shipped eggs out of the incuabator. 10 days until I find out.
It's usually upbringing that causes hens to reject chicks. If they are not like what she could see around her during her first 6 weeks then they usually thing it's am imposter not a chicken, and try to make it go away.
If the chicks are raised in a multi breed or multi species environment then...
My 2 Broodies are still sitting comfortably together. All 10 of thier eggs show good development when I candled them.
Should have some more chicks in about a week.
Good chance that it died because the mum left at the wrong time. If it's got it's beak out and not responding then it's probably dead, but you could try and open that one up if it's out from under the hen, however at this stage moving the hen at all greatly reduces the chance of any successfully...
