If your hen was broody, she's still be sitting - on golf ball or eggs - or even nothing. I doubt your hen was broody to begin with. Sometimes hens take a long time to lay an egg. That may have been what she was doing. I have one hen who sits in the nest for up to 2 hours just to lay her egg...
It doesn't sound like your hen is broody.
Edited to add that fertilized eggs aren't likely to stay viable for a couple weeks. The hatch rate goes down considerably after about 10 days.
To clarify why I'm not sure about the hen keeping the babies warm is because I found one of the chicks laying in the bedding away from the mother. The chick was cold and barely moving when I found it, so I took it and put it in a small box with straw in it and placed that box under a heat lamp...
Thank you for the suggestions on how to get just ONE hen to finish sitting on the pipping eggs. What I did was place a broody hen in a large plastic tub, with food, water & bedding, of course, then put the eggs in there and covered it with hardware cloth. I then placed that tub in a darkened...
Please help!
I have group of 7 broody Serama hens who are all bunched up together in a pen in the garage. They have been persistently broody for going on three months now. A few weeks ago I discovered two chicks that had almost hatched but had died. I suspect they were inadvertently killed by...
Here's what has hatched so far - 5 baby Seramas! Both of the remaining eggs have pipped but nothing else yet. Keeping my fingers crossed for them.
These babies are so tiny!
My silkied Serama hen has 7 of the original 9 eggs left. Two had to get tossed - one quitter and one possible infertile or died early on. Just checked on her a few minutes ago and she has three pipping! I hear them chirping and chipping away at their shells. Keeping my fingers crossed for them.
My first time hatching any chicks was with a Serama hen a few months ago. Out of six eggs, only one hatched. That chick died after a week or so. I wasn't even really trying to hatch any, just thought I'd let her sit on the eggs since she went broody. Now, the same hen is sitting on eggs again...
Good news! The wait is finally over! The little Serama chick finally hatched this evening while I was out. It's soooo adorable - and tiny!

They have been getting out of their shells for eons, just try to relax and breathe. before you know it you'll see lil fuzzy butts running around. Mama will take care of everything!
It's hard waiting, though. I feel like a kid again, and that's enjoyable. AND we have a PIP now!
Here we are on day 22 1/2. I just went out to check the eggs but still no pipping yet, BUT I can hear a chick chirping inside one of them! Let's hope it's able to get out of it's shell o.k.

well don't be too concerned, day 23 is yet to be.
Today is day 21. I just checked but still no pipping yet. Yesterday I candled and saw that only two are viable and those two had big air sacs. Only saw one chick moving, but I didn't keep the eggs out for very long. Day 23? My nerves...

If she is safe then I'd just leave her. keep us updated.
Thank you. I just took a quick peek and didn't see any pipping yet. I'm anxious for them to hatch but don't want to do anything that will keep them from it. It's hard not to just sit in there with her and wait, thinking something...
Today is day 18 for my broody Serama hen to be sitting on eggs. From candling a few days ago I know that several are quitters, but there are at least two eggs that look like they're developing along they way they should, as far as I know. This is my first time attempting to hatch anything. I...
