Every EE roo over Barred Rock hen I've hatched, the boys ended up with barred feathers (not a "at hatch" trait I could see but one that as he grew I could see). CG

I think pullet. Comb is still small and pink (not red) and more importantly, no reddish feathers on the shoulder/wing and an even feather pattern.

I think that is a boy. For 8 weeks old, the red around the eyes is too much for a pullet, even if she was excited or exercising (which might have increased the blood flow). CG

The red feathers on the shoulders, and the patchiness of the colors, make me think cockerel. Comb comfirms. CG

I find my boys seem to feather in slowly,,,like they are trying to make me guess if they are going to have red shoulders or not. ( I even had one cockerel with a naked back and no tail he was so slow to grow feathers. I actually was worried that the other chicks were picking them but never...

It's not 100% accurate - the feather growing thing. You have to know if the hen and rooster have the fast/slow feathering genes for it to be more accurate. However, with that being said, I use that plus other indicators to tell me "You might be a boy because I see a,b, and c." or "You might be...

I've got a chick or two beginning to feather with brown/black bars like this. Be interesting to see how they finish feathering out into. I was going to try selling them but it seems like no one is interested so I may see they grow up after all.

I too added light in the morning only. You also have to be careful about adding lights that doesn't have any flicker to it. I recently read that chickens can see the the subtle flicker of light and it will bother them. I wish I knew where I read it so I could direct you to the article. I'm...

Besides the comb turning red, the skin around the eyes also gets red at point of lay. I use the red eyes more of my "any day now" indicator than the reddening of the comb.

I've got two that look like this. They came from a RIR hen, EE roo. At first I was hoping the abundance of red feathers was just from mom, but now at 5 weeks, the combs are beginning to redden up so now I think I've got two boys. I'm not saying that your chick is a boy because of the red...

I was fooled by an AustraWhite. It got a bigger and redder comb at about 3 months (I didn't write down exact date I made this realization) than the other AustraWhite. I kept waiting for the crowing. At about 5 months, when the same age pullets started laying, I butchered an older rooster and...
