That's a hen in my avatar. She's a frizzled/mottled Japanese Bantam. I purchased eggs to hatch so I could bring in some new blood, so I have no idea on the parentage of this guy/girl other than it hatched from a blue egg.
This might have to be one I wait for either a crow or an egg on. S/he hatched as a chocolate brown chick.. That's why I love EEs though. They are like a box of chocolates........... you never know what you're gonna get!
Age is 12 weeks. That's what's got me questioning the sex. Based on coloring, I was thinking this was a cockerel. I'm not seeing wattles or saddle feathers yet though. The comb looks pale and small. Legs are thin. I was hoping for a silver/black cockerel........
The comb is a single row pea comb that is pretty bright, but hasn't gotten larger for about a month. I checked saddle feathers earlier, and there are some pointy ones starting to come on. Looks like my dad will be getting his EE cockerel this weekend to go ith the pretty little hen he has. :)
The splotchiness of the colors, black/white pattern, comb, posture all point to cockerel :/ If so, he will be going to my dad since he is looking for an EE rooster.
Thanks :) She is as sweet as she is beautiful. She looked like a cockerel with the three rows and red comb from the time I got her. Comb stayed the same size and shade of red, so I kept hoping. She is close to laying now, and I can't wait to see what color her eggs are. I'm still holding on to a...
Just when you think you have your EEs figured out, you end up with a pullet that has all three rows raised in the pea comb :/ Good thing I held on to her even though everyone thought Bernice was Bernie! She's gorgeous :)
I've got someone wanting to purchase a pair of EEs, I guess I'll go with this one being a cockerel and let them bring him back if it turns out to be a pullet.
This comb has been driving me crazy! It's a wonky single row of peas. I'm pretty good at picking three rows out early, but this one has been bothering me. Can a cockerel have a single row pea comb? No red splashes, and no pointy saddle feathers?
