My 3 EE's hatched June 9, followed your dates almost exactly! They all squatted right before laying. After the first started laying, it totally changed the pecking order too.
Hum. I'll pay closer attention. My 4 older girls- all lay different shades and I know them. I haven't seen any small pullet eggs. But a couple that I attribute to my RIR have come lightly speckled the last couple of days.
These girls are 6 months. No squatting, no sign of laying. My other girls, assorted breeds were laying by 4-5 months. Is it because they came of age in November/December? Will they wait till spring? I don't use a light, but the roof of the coop is clear polycarbonate.
So after hatching 6 EE Roos, I went and got 3 suppose to be sexed EE chicks. They are 6 weeks and by 6 weeks my little Roos all were showing pink in the comb. No sign of any pink in these newbies, but their feather pattern and what looks like 3 rows of peas on one is making me nervous. Here is...
Here's five of my presumed male EE's . They are such goofballs when they all dust bath together. My 8 year old daughter compared choosing which one to keep with The Bachelorette today.
Always choose the boy that is most respectful of humans and the other birds. A cockerel that respects your space and gives you room to do what you need to do around the coop is one that is worth considering keeping. Cockerels that are always running up to you could be birds that will take it one...
So would you pick the smallest cockerel to keep if you could only have one? Right now at 10 weeks my biggest and my smallest are the friendliest with people.
One keeps to himself from the other birds and from people, but is very pretty.
Has any one found that certain colors correlate with personality at all? I know there have been studies in canines and was wondering if EE's might exhibit this too?
I'm also trying to decide which of my 6 cockerels to keep. I will probably take the above advice and wait till about 16 weeks to chose.
What your opinion of "enough hens to go around " I'm in a suburban setting also, what age will personality traits be clear? Tough to decide who and how many to keep. I have 4 pullets that are 7 weeks right now.
Acorn , just about 10 weeks. It's a little ruffled getting cooled off in the sand. I was assuming male, because of being the biggest, but my most peaceful bird. Also just saw a comment above about an orange pullet...
This is the one and only one I'm thinking is female. Consistent feather pattern, no much tail to speak of. Does have a little pinkish blush to her comb but it is much narrower then the rest.
