Hackles will usually come in before saddles, and unfortunately each bird is different. Especially with this breed. From my experience, however, 16-18 weeks you will see the start, and know for sure by 20-22. With variance on either side of those numbers. Best of luck!!! He's soooo blue!!! <3

Just my opinion, but considering comb/wattles, I say boy. Feathering is no real help in this breed until later. Legs are a bit petite, but head shape and glowing red comb tells me boy. Even in the blurry pic, you can see how developed his wattles are. Fingers crossed for you, my gut says boy.

Here is an updated shot of Beatrice, formerly known as Bucky. lol. I was so sure she was a cockerel. No tail until late, very slow feather development, comb was pink from the get go as were the wattles. She was a few weeks when they grew and reddened to the size they are now, but they stopped...

That is a serious comb coming up, which would make me say cockerel. However, the feathers and stance just look so hen to me. Wow, that's a tough one!! Pretty enough in my opinion to wait on the egg before re-homing. Such a pretty blue!

In my experience, there is zero way to tell the difference between the male and female BLRW chicks (except vent sexing). Every time I think I land on a difference, I find out otherwise. What definitely does not work is feather sexing, the no tail=roo thing, early feathering, lighter blue on...

I've maintained the thought he's a cockerel from day 2. Slow comb and wattle growth has had me second guessing lately. That and even patterned, rounded feathers.

Here he/she is at 7 weeks. I am guessing cockerel, but sometimes get distracted. :)

Well, I think I know for sure number 1 is a pullet. At least for the next day or two!

IMO, I still think 1,2,3 pullets, 4 cockerish but I'm on the fence with 3. I am calling three a pullet just because she had a tail from the get go. They are going to change so much. Oh, and I am only weighing in for what it's worth. <3

I agree, but it's throwing me that his comb and wattles are so small compared to other roos his age.

We were SOOO sure this guy was a cockerel, but recently I'm changing opinion. "Bucky" is 6 weeks old. What do you think? When the comb and wattles are not washed out by the flash, they are pinkish.
