A few of you asked me to keep posting updates as the initial pattern on these chicks was unusual. There was some concern they wouldn't end up laced. There were also predicted to be Roos so... :)
Pullet one-not my favorite-the balance of red and blue is out of whack to me. I also think she has...
3.5 months! These are going to be BIG birds it seems. They've grown taller then almost everyone in the flock and are heavier bodied then my HQ New Hampshire, my EE, and one of my Marans. As my first set of better quality birds, I'm pretty happy with them :)
This one was hen raised and not a fan...
Ten weeks! Finally getting some beauty to her. I like the type of the second, darker pullet better though. It's sooooo hard to capture the wonderful color. I tried flash and no flash but had no luck :(
More update photos-9 wks. This chick was very black for the first seven weeks so I'm very surprised its blue. Looks like a pullet to me. What do y'all think?
I managed to score a mixed dozen from this breeder back in April, before he sold out. I only ended up with two BLRWs of the four hatch. He was very helpful and good to deal with. The two I have (pic are in my previous posts here) appear to be Roos so if you'd be interested...
So bummed that this is most likely a roo. I only set four BLRW eggs because that's all I could get a hold of locally. Two hatched and it seems I got two Roos :(
The chick in question has no sheen at all so I guess its just a super dark blue. But none the less, if its a roo it's gotta find a...
So in your opinion what will this chick end up as and how long do I wait to say "ok she's a black"? I'm looking for a blue so while blacks are nice, she will go on CL if she isn't blue (or isn't a she).
Get out!!!! I would be ecstatic if it turns out to be a blue and a pullet!!!! It looks very very very black in person.
Here is a picture showing some of her chest, the only place any lacing has shown up and it's still weird to me. No red to be seen. In person it's light black laced by dark...
Daesee-my chicks looked very similar to the two on the left of you picture. They are now a dark blue and a black.
The chick in the front is now very black. Can't believe how much they change!
Her/him (wish I knew) now...
And the other is now a blue (rooster I think).
A week or two old...
A...
Well the white band has the most wattle. If I had to pick one, Id say thats the roo. The others all look like pullets to me (with my limited experience). How old are they? Their lacing seems so much better then my seven week olds!
Well fudge! Maybe I have two roosters then? I don't know why I hadn't thought to compare them but now looking at the pictures the black, who I thought was a pullet, has more wattle!
I
I don't know much about split wing. I assume its a fault in a show bird but what a out a backyard rooster to a layer flock? How does split wing affect adult birds?
