I didn't think my girls would need a covered run until the rain came this fall/winter. My husband put a temporary roof on that helped a lot. He's redoing it this summer, so it has a good pitch to let the rain run off. Having it covered makes a HUGE difference.

Susan D, How large is your run? Is it covered at all?

I use wood chips and fir nuggets. Sometimes you can get the wood chips for free, but I get mine at the same place I get the fir nuggets. It is not expensive. The base of the run is river silt and has good drainage. The wood material eventually starts to break down, but has lasted a very long...

We are in the process of covering all of our 16x8 run. I can't wait! The part of the run that isn't covered now doesn't get used at all in the rain. The base of the run is river silt and on top is a layer of wood chips and fir nuggets. So far that has been working. It decomposes over time...

Great idea Java! Meetups would be the perfect place to start a group. I know there is a BYC member who lives only about a mile from me.

I live in South Salem. I have 4 (20 wk. old) Blue and Black Laced American Standard Orpington pullets and 3 (17 wk. old) Gold Laced English Orpington pullets. Seems I learn something new about chicken keeping almost everyday.

Hi sktlmt, I just rehomed 6 black & blue laced Orpington cockerels. It tool a while. They were all from the same hatch and 5 of them went to tend a big flock in a rural area. The luckiest went to a young man and his mom who have a small flock. It isn't so easy finding homes for the boys. You...

Fantastic idea Meowoui. Thank you! We have a tree nursery, so usually have pvc. We have a styro cooler and I've been freezing milk jugs of water to put in their hanging water bucket. I'll see if I can recruit my husband to help me with this.

Hi Aggiemae, I live not far from you I'd guess. We are on Battle Creek south of Kuebler. About 6 mo. ago we had wild turkeys wander through our place. We get the other critters too. There is a cougar that passes through, but not often that we see. Neighbors usually notify one another if they see...

Oregon folks, I've got 10 wk old Blue Lace & Black Orpington cockerels. Perfect for a 4H project. See listing in rehome and for sale forums. I've hand raised them myself. A couple of these birds are really worth breeding or for show. The best of the lot free to any young person in 4H who is...

I am in Salem. We have our coop built and got post holes dug for aviary/run. Still waiting on chicks arriving that I ordered from Heirloom Orpingtons. Nightime lows here need to get to no lower than 50 before they'll ship. I'm getting 10 chicks 5 different varieties. I don't have much...

I am going to go to the sway meet. Sounds really fun. I had better tell my husband to pick up the pace on the coop! LOL!

Since I really fell in love with Big Mama (the Delaware in my photo) I've been considering getting another one. Big Mama was lured away from our place by a neighbors rooster. She's happy there though as they have a big flock and she's no longer the only chicken. How do you think a Delaware...

I'm in Salem. Just starting out with chickens. I would like to get four chics. Have not decided on the breed(s) yet. They will be primarily for egg production and pets for me. Can anyone recommend where to get specific breed chics within a 100 miles of Salem? Where did you all get your...
