I use sand in the run, it is great for keeping the stench down and it's easy to clean. With all the rain we get the feed that gets scratched out of the feeder will start to rot and ferment and stink to high heaven and attract flies. I have a small tractor like coop that I move back and forth...

I have pulled my Silkie girls in the house when it was freezing temperature all night long I put them in their dedicated laundry basket in the mud room. I make sure to take them back out early in the morning before they dump out. My three hens I have let brood in the house before and they're...

I still use pine shavings in their house and nest boxes. The sand is great though for the run! The barnyard stench is gone, just in time for summer!

I was using shavings in the run too until chicken chick turned me on to sand, it keeps the stench down better. We have a small coop and we pick it up and move it, I have two sand spots the size of the coop. We pick it up shovel the spilled food and droppings out then put fresh sand over that...

Get those gorgeous eggs from @Zanna and a couple of Americauna chicks if available! I've got Silkies for the kids to play with and possibly show but they're not great egg layers in general. I have one hen who lays almost daily, one hen laid everyday for a month went broody and another nine...

Anybody want a White Bearded Silkie Cockerel? He was hatched 12/25/14 from eggs from Florida. He most likely carries splash and it grey genes. He is a pet bird we can't have rooster s in the city so he's free to good home. Salem

That's great you found out the mystery of the crest! If you're looking for lap chickens a Silkie would be it! They're easily trained especially as chicks and enjoy being held. Our first two Silkies were constantly held as chicks by the kids and me, now they're adults they still enjoy being...

Hard telling they could of been told they were Cochins and they didn't know any better. I've seen a bunch of Cochins and silkies kept together, I'm sure because of their similar size. Intrigued with the bars, there's a cuckoo Silkie with bars they are really neat! I ordered eggs for cuckoos...

Count toes Silkies are supposed to have five . I think they look like a mix too with the crests that is typical of a Silkie and if they are you wont be able to tell sex until about five months or so. I have a white Silkie hen that we were sure was a Roo she even crowed once but started laying...

I bet that was hard to sell your Silkies, easy to get attached to them, I have a white hen who follows me around like a dog, she's the boss of the flock, her docile sister is a grey partridge they both have gone broody on me the last couple of days. I worried about the partridge she gorged on...

We're in the Salem area, today we had a very large flock of geese fly over our place, they scattered droppings all over just on a fly over. Think I'm going to keep the chicks in the coop for awhile no more free range until we get another good rain to clean it out of here and the geese are gone...

I have a nice Bearded Buff Silkie Roo who was hatched 9/4/14, I actually i have two but I think I've found a home for one. They're hatch mates and stay together well, no fighting. I'm wondering if I should be splitting them up or finding a home for both?

Thanks for all the information! Yes I free range my birds and the little finches swoop in for a snack. I'm hoping it's just an issue with water fowl not the song birds. I'm assuming geese and ducks?

No I didn't try hatching any, I'm at the city limit of five birds already. I did look for the bullseye though and thought I saw it in a few of the eggs. Okay so what's with the bird flu? Do they act sick and what should we keep an eye out for?

I bought some cage free eggs and I just wonder if they're fertile but not marked as being so? I'd be half tempted to try to incubate them anyway just to see, you'd be able to see development by day 3 or 4.

I'm really suprised Freddy's didn't have any in their organic section, they carry a large variety of eggs. Do you have a Life Source? I read somewhere that sometimes the chain grocers have fertile eggs. I hope you find some and share the outcome! This is a neat experiment!
