Looks like roo damage and then the hen or other hens picking at pin feathers. They think those blood filled feathers taste good. Can up protein to help feather replacement. Mites can cause birds to pick, but common around here are feather lice. Feather lice will chew up feathers and are visable...

I had dozens that required no babying... ugly, near crestless, mottled colored birds who ran with the production birds.. but I don't know if you could get any further from standard to even call them silkies. LOL. They were fury and sold as "black meat chickens" just as well as they would have...

It can depend highly on the breed. You can feed sexlinks or leghorns in their first year of laying complete garbage and they will give you a great egg every single day. They'll be worse for the wear on themselves, but they'll be egg machines. Baby those birds and they'll give you a great egg...

Quote: Don't worry about picking all roosters out of straight run... I have a knack for picking all roosters out of an order of pullets.

Welcome! I've driven to Lincoln city to get Rocky Mountain Chocolate! Some day I'll make that drive over to Oregon city to hug the ducks! When ever I head past I'll wave! If all goes well down here with funding. I'll be here for 5-6 years, while my birds are in Washington.

Hello everyone! I will now be in SW Corvallis but my chickens will be in Everett WA. Anyone want to do some boarding in the Corvallis area? I'm half way between Philomath and Corvallis city centers. Perhaps let me play with your birds when mine are 300 miles away? Anyone? :p
