Feeling a sense of deja vue. I feel her pain... I had a narrow window sill that they would roost on until I made a roost for them that was a fraction of an inch higher.

Thanks! I'm exhausted, but we did get the bleeding to stop. I would say that using a tea strainer to sprinkle flour or cornstarch worked better for me than just using a cup. I've given up on cleaning up the dried on blood until she can shake her head without making herself bleed again. She...

I was going to dub her when I got home from my kid's swimming lesson, only to find she tore it off herself. We're trying to stop the bleeding, what a mess. We've tried corn starch and flour. She is able to breathe a little better now that we've gotten the blood out of her nostrils. She is very...

Thanks! I think I can find a sharp enough pair of scissors somewhere around here... Do you think it'd be enough just to go by where it's torn? I certainly want to keep the undamaged part.

That's what I'm thinking. :( She keeps shaking her head, trying to get the hanging part out of her face. I was thinking of packing the comb in dressings to sort of immobilize it, but the only way to do that is to make a bonnet out of vetwrap. But no chickens keep their head still for me, and...

Mine would fight over that top roost. Everyone wants the highest place.

    1) Separate/isolate her from all other chickens. 2) Give her the spa treatment - warm bath with Epsom salts. Make sure her vent is included in this. You may have to empty a refill several times, either due to dirt, blood, or poop. Do this until the area is reasonably clean and free of...

She also could be hiding them... I thought my Peaches had taken a break. (Easy to recognize her eggs - they're shiny.) Then one day I found her stash - 8 eggs. Well, Easter egg hunting isn't so bad if you know where she's hiding them, right? A couple of weeks after that, she has a shell...

Pecking order can change. They can also do this to each other if there's limited roosting space and they get bored. At least, that's a factor with my neighbor, I suspect. (Her birds always looked a bit more disheveled than this, except after a raccoon attack left her with only 2 girls... Who...

I see signs of missing/broken feathers - do you have a rooster/cockerel? Is this one low on the pecking order?

That just means you need to add some BOs to your flock! You know, just do the chicken math. :lau A few BOs are guaranteed to give you warm fuzzies inside when you watch them. :love

So sorry for your loss @meetthebubus That is really bizarre - and frustrating. At least you have a good idea of what happened.:hugs

PSA: Watch out for the heat. Lost half of my girls (all BO's) yesterday. Granted, they were all 3 years old, and one was already ill (internal laying takes a toll). The other 2 were perfectly healthy AFAIK, just bigger than the others.

I'd say pullet, not roo. But it's hard to tell with BOs - there was one in my flock that everyone else next to her flock mates looked huge, larger comb - otherwise intelligent people assumed she must be a roo. Then she started laying eggs - double yolkers for a while, just to make a point, LOL.

No, they don't care much for the baths... washes off all their carefully stored dust. I have a problem girl like yours... Basin was thick with dirt even after the 3rd go through last time I bathed her. (A lot of stuff sticks to scrambled eggs.) It does not sound like your girl is happy...
