Funny you said preemie, we almost named her that. Today is day 23 for the mommies, so what should I do? And why would they let that other chick wander off and get cold. Don't they have the instinct to get them back to nest?
I am hoping for the same thing! tomorrow is day 23!! thought I heard chirping today too! and my rooster is crowing more and it's actually annoying me! hopefully he goes back to crowing less when his ladies are back with him!
Thank you so much for this info. Today is day 22 so I will leave them alone. The one in the house is tiny. The one that hatched on day on 20 was bigger but chilled and didn't make it. Husband doesn't want to put her back out with moms because of how little and fragile she is.
Well when we checked under her yesterday, it resulted in her smashing an egg, which is why I am scared to now. I didn't see or hear any chicks or chirping today. Should I pick her right up off the nest tomorrow? When will she leave the nest if rest of chicks didn't make it? Wonder if one in...
Today is day 21. Heard chirping under mamas last night. Keep going out there today, but I don't see any chicks out from under her. Too afraid to move the hens after yesterdays episode. Now the one we brought in yesterday has made it so far and detached from the shell this morning. I got her to...
Long story short to get faster answer. Have a chick inside house under heat lamp. Partial emergency situation taken in from under broody mom. Still hasn't opened eyes. Chirping. Still has yolk sack attached. What do I do? Put her back with broody moms? Rest are due to hatch tomorrow.
Why didn't the moms get him back there? I set up the brooder in case it happens again. I figured that's what happened. But I have to go to work now and I don't want too!
Day 20 and I just went to check on mommas and I found a chick quite a ways away from the nest. Little chick didn't make it. Why did that happen? This is my first time as well as my broodies first time.
I was told that it's possible an egg broke and one of the mommas pushed it out of the nest. Hatch day is Tuesday so it may be too early for a chick, but I will check. I was also told co brooding doesn't usually result in a happy ending. So I am a tad nervous now.
oh ok! so I will stock up on oyster shell and chick food by the bundle! haha! thank you all so much for your brilliant tips and knowledge! I am so new to this broody chicken thing!
help, I just came home from work and went to see my chickens. checked on mamas in coop and I found a partial bloody egg shell at the coop door edge! what is that all about!
