I think you might find similar results with a Broody and shipped eggs. All my shipped that were under my broody were duds. She kicked them out from under her in a matter of days. Eggtopsy showed yellow watery eggs-no development. And one I couldn't get the air sack to reattach so didn't even...
Dixie left the broody bungalow last Friday and went into the big coop. Before she did she laid an egg. Hormones have switched back over already. Last night the chicks followed her in and now everybody is in the big coop. Added another roost for the transition with the two year olds who are...
I just want to give a genuine heartfelt thanks to Fisherlady and Lady of McCamley for their fountain of information they supplied so many and myself on this thread. We found this beautiful surprise when we came home from camping late this morning and then just moments ago:
We watched a...
I also might add that if your temps are that warm and the birds are panting dropping wings to cool themselves, then I like to add a block of ice to the waterer to help cool that water right down and keep it down. I usually put a reused frozen plastic water bottle right into a gallon...
BLT79: Do you want the Hens to set on the eggs and hatch chicks or do you want to break them of their broodiness? What sort of advice are you wanting at this time?
I'm thinking she did. And it was playing in my head that she knew this one "wouldn't do" and I trusted that it was cold and kicked out for a reason. I'm trusting her a lot in this whole thing. If this other shipped egg ends up being a dud I might talk to the lady...if she responds to an ebay...
My Dixie had kicked out one of my BLRW to a corner ...and then broody-pooed on it. Needless to say when I found it it was cold. I washed it off and brought it in the house. It was too much of a mess and after the washing...it would have never made it so I did an egg-topsy. Not one bit of...
There was a scrunch on a corner of the box. Hard to say. One thing too they were wrapped heavy duty with thick paper toweling inside a foam egg carton and news print around the box. Would have felt a little bit warmer fuzzy feeling about bubble wrap. Maybe it doesn't make a difference...
3 hens and a roo! sounds about perfect to me. What a nice little hatch with those Rhodebars--for eggs--sounds wonderful. It will fun to watch your girls develop with those different markings too. Neat!
I'm a little scared for the BLRW eggs from Kentucky myself I'll candle Saturday...I...
Oh my.....! Thank you for sharing! They are so beautiful. What a delight to see them...and already curious out exploring away from the hen. That's fun to see too. It will be interesting to see what your little yellow chipmunk turns out!
The Broody is amazing too. I see where you are...
Is your RIR from a breeder or from a hatchery? If she's Hatchery likelihood is that she won't. Her parents were selected down lines where broodiness has been selected against. Because most folks want egg layers --not broodies. When they are broody, they are not laying. A breeder may not...
Oh wow randerson! That's nice! Is that just for the Broody?...or for several chickens? That pine paneling sure makes for a nice coop doesn't it? Looks sharp. Well done.
Lady of McCamley those Rhodebars look amazing. Some of the Hens are stunning...and the Roosters...? There are no words. Lots of variation too on the barring...but to me that's part of the fun sometimes...wow.
Thank you! Alaskan! I think Dixie is liking her privacy too...she's less Growly. I was lucky to snatch these large cabinet knotty pine doors last fall on a demo at my work place and we have a few bits laying around from basement finishing too...so it all came together. recycled stuff...
LOL. I'm feeling lucky about 2/3rds being okay to put under the Broody too after travelling further than I've been in 5 years. Clearly...getting your eggs as local as you can...less miles between the egg and the hen is the way to be. But I needed to have what I needed to have- DH would call...
Thanks Fisherlady. I see looking at the picture now...that I'll want to clean up last winter's straw/litter out of the run before those chicks arrive.
We can improve that for the wee ones...
I don't think I've posted these yet to this thread--randerson and Molly have seen it on our Hatch-a-long Thread but thought it might be helpful for others coming to this thread. I'm so excited about this.... This is Dixie in the new Broody coop. Moistened feed and water near by. Cozy nest in...
