    Broody Hen Thread!

FYI: I separated them and put them in a brooder. I went out there and they were all shivering while she stood there. I just feel like it's the best decision. My heart's really broken for her (she's looking for them) and the chicks, but I think this will be best.

Should I be concerned: Our mama hen is so not gentle with the babies. She's digging around in the coop and just kicking the babies. She constantly pecks them in the head (even grabbed one and tossed out of the way of her food). The four bigger chicks mostly get out of the way, but the two...

Advice: So, I'm planning on keeping the babies/mama separate from the other 2 girls (our Plymouth Rock is friendly to us, but ALWAYS picks at things and I really have a feeling she'd nip at the babies nonstop). I think we'll section off a space in the run (so they can be outside) with...

Seriously! It's making me crazy (in a good way). Ha! It's hard to just trust your chicken… but they really do know what they're doing. I'll keep you up to date on more crazy broody hens w/chicks stories. Hee!

All 6 babies have hatched! Though.... I almost dropped two. I'm still panicked. They fell out the back hatch when I opened the door (I had a feeling that might happen, so that's why I opened the door slowly). Gah. Luckily they just fell onto the door. Our nesting box door opens at the back of...

I was so wrong. Just checked on her and the tiniest little yellow chick popped out from under her. Two of those boogers under there. They are most definitely the seramas.... So tiny.

Didn't think about that. We often give out girls crushed up boiled eggs (with the shells). She's been sitting there for so long, I bet there's some stuff she needs from the shells. I think I will move them, break them up, and place them in front of her. She's a dainty lady and only eats small...

Thank you for the tips! I'll move those shells a little bit later in the evening. Luckily she is a sweet girl. She hasn't tried to bite me, just lots of puffing and growling.

Thank you. I believe those 2 are our Serama/Frizzle cochin mixes, though it is possible those eggs came from the other Serama hen they had. They weren't sure which hen laid the eggs, but their guess was the Cochin. Can't wait to see how they grow!

Ok, I have 2 of my chicks hatched, and I have some newbie hen-raising-chicks questions: - Should I just leave the shells under there? - Is there an awesome hen-raising-chicks thread you guys like on BYC? - I've mentioned in other posts that my girl seems to miss eggs when she gets up and...

Ugh. Waiting is terrible! I know for sure we have one egg zipping. Our broody is getting more protective of me looking under her, so it's making the waiting harder. I'll have to keep checking under her wings, etc…. since when she moves a couple eggs always pop out. UGH. Ok, off to distract...

Found a pip in one of our eggs today! Tomorrow is day 20 and miss broody refused to come out and poo. I think it's chick time, woo! :D

I'd compare the wait to the final days of my pregnancy…. minus the heartburn and waddling while I walk. I'd compare the wait to the final days of my pregnancy…. minus the heartburn and waddling while I walk.

Couldn't help myself. Candled one of my frizzle cochin/serama eggs (day 16) and she was wiggling. It's hard to see, but if you watch closely. It's so neat.

5ish days till Day 21. I am so excited and ready for that day. Excited for chicks and ready for the egg sitting time to be done. Each time my girl gets off to poo… then heads back to the nest… she misses 1 or 2 eggs (they're usually under her wing). Luckily I figured this out early on. So, I...

I was worried about this, so we put tiny bowls of food and water by her face. She eats and drinks when we're not looking and comes out once a day or so to poop terrible poops.

We use a very bright LED flashlight. It's been working! I'm new to the whole hatching eggs thing, but we candled on Day 3 (egg in cupped hand and flashlight under egg) and saw veins. I'd check on day 4 or so to see. I guess it also depends on how dark brown the eggs are. We have a Maran egg and...
