As long as they don't draw blood or hold the chicks down and continue to peck them, they should be ok. The chicks should learn proper respect for the elders in the flock. Occassionally you might have an older hen who hates chicks, but most likely they will be fine.
BTW: chickens don't...
Usually it is soon after they leave. However, different hens stay with their babies for longer than others. As with most chicken questions, the answer is "it depends". :-)
I have found that the best way of breaking broodiness it to put the offender in a wire bottom cage( with food and water of course) and make sure that air is circulating under her. I have not had much luck with pulling them off the nest and keeping eggs away. I have had them sit on nothing in a...
It is hard on the broody to be broody for an extra long time. If you want to try eggs with one. Do the newer broody and see if you can break the one who has been at it longer. It would be better for her health than to be broody for 6 weeks. At least that's the route I would go. Good luck...

Sorry but mu phone won't let me quote. There is no guarantee that a hen will ever go broody. You can encourage her by having an inviting nest, soft, clean, and darrk. Also, leave golf balls or fake eggs in the nest. If you leave real ones they will go bad and have the...
Yep, I told my breeder that her eggs were "defective" as there were way more than 50% roos in the hatch!
Went out to open the coop this morning and heard a strange sound. I stopped and looked and saw one of my banty cockerels stretching his neck and making a noise. I won't say crowing as...
Question -
Anyone out there have a broody mama go to roost at 1 1/2 - 2 weeks - without the babies?
Mine keeps trying to roost and doesn't seem to care that they are still on the floor. The babies don't protest too much, just pile up together and sleep. I keep putting her back on the...
They may have been fertile but for some reason just didn't develop. It just happens.
How much longer for the "new" eggs Daffy got?
Good luck.
I can visualize the chaos now!
I have 6/8 (possibly 7/8) 2 month olds that are boys. I dread making the choices.
My 2 week olds - I was...
No. What they are saying is if mom gets off the nest with the hatched one, you may try to put the unhitched ons in the incubator if you think that they are viable. Then, if those hatch, put them under her at night, after they are fluffy and running around.
Most likely she will stay put...
Well, I don't have answers to all the questions but I will give you my "2 cents" on a couple of them. Broodiness spawns broodiness. It is not uncommon for it to be "catching" in a flock. Something to do with instinct I think.
I have never tried to adopt out chicks so I will skip answering...
Yay! I enjoy the in the coop hatch as well. Luckily my nests are moveable and I set up a barricaide around the broody on day 18 and leave it until I am sure the eggs are finished. I too had some freshly hatched chicks crushed, so for me this is the best of both worlds. :-)
If they are squabbling and fighting over the favorite nest box, that is normal laying behavior. Even if you have ten nest boxes, they will all want to pick the same one to lay in, generally. Any hen who is laying or preparing to lay her egg displays grouchyness and a protective behavior over the...
