We have a camera in the coop so I can watch for her to leave. Orpy has settled in the box next to hers.
But what if Buffy decides she wants to hatch? Can I split up the eggs? We do not have a rooster and I'm not interested in purchasing more fertilized eggs. Lol
So Buffy growling and puffing up does not necessarily mean she wants the nest? I've not seen this behavior over laying eggs, the one who wants the occupied nest to lay usually just makes a fuss.
So Orpy came off the next for a break and her sister, Buffy, jumped on it. There's a standoff now. Do I just leave them or what?? Both are Buff Orpingtons, which are know for going broody if I have researched correctly?
my fear is that Orpy doesn't go back and Buffy is not actually going to stay.
She's never been all that friendly. She will take treats nicely so I'll give it a try.
So grateful for everyone's wisdom here. I will definitely keep a close watch.
NO!!! We have to wear gloves to try and move her while she puffs up, growls and pecks at us quite aggressively  Talk about a mama hen! She scared the pants off a squirrel who dared to go near HER coop. I was dying!! :lau
Yes, eggs are marked. And no hen dares to enter HER nest. The bottom ones cautiously enter the coop to lay. Lol she was TOP hen and she most definitely let the others know from the start😂😂
Yes, free range 90% of the time. We have a privacy fence on all sides and small gaps covered with wire...
Good to know. She is in the coop in a nesting box so the girls have to see her when they lay. We put up a half curtain to give her a little shield because the others would not go in to lay with her growling at them. Maybe we should remove that. For now, they (not broody) are all roosting in the...
What happens to the pecking order when a hen goes broody? Orpy was always top hen, no challenges from the others. But today I noticed the second in line asserting herself quietly, but Orpy got the message and walked away. Second hen is dominant but rarely mean in her enforcement. I wish they all...
Hello! So glad I found this thread! We have a broody hen (48 hrs now) and ordered some fertile eggs. Seller didn't ship first thing this morning like we discussed and now the delivery is delayed until Monday. Will we be too late for putting the eggs under her? Today we got her out of the nesting...
