    I had thought about using some heavy wood screws and adding some length to the rafters (maybe a couple of feet) and extending it at least on the sides. I've also considered getting an estimate for siding and going that route if it's not outrageous. That way the wood would be protected and...

    Ideally, that's what should be done. I checked w/ someone about extending the roof, and they said it would be difficult but not impossible to do. I'll check into both options and add them to the "wish list".
