If anyone is willing to take in a couple rescued battery hens, here's a link. Looks like they'll be free, they're npip and organic. http://www.promisinghope.com/HenRescueDeadlineApril2010.html

Quote: So I just hopped on the Ideal web site and noticed that their BA's and BO's are now back-ordered until May, so if I wanted to add extras to your order, they'll be out of what I want when the Brabanters you want become available! Don't lose hope, I'm going to try to sneak a few in on...

If I could find somewhere local and cheap to butcher/process, I'd definately do meaties. I'm not doing it myself though. I just scored a 6x12' dog kennel to use as my run! I'm going to jig it around and use the 8' wall of my coop as one side, so the girls will have plenty of room. They'll...

Quote: They'd probably be alright. I'll have mine in the coop by then, so I could easily chick-sit yours if you're willing to drop them off and pick them up. We can mark them easily enough. Unless we get a crazy cold spell, they should be fine though. I had my 6 weekers outside last year...

Oh sweet! I may head up to the Plaistow swap to sell my extra chicks and see if I can find a blrw **Crosses fingers for nice weather** I had so much fun at the swaps last year, can't wait to see everyone again.

I'm only keeping 5, so I'll have some of each available And yep, all pullets; I dealt with enough roosters last year. Of course the hatchery only promises 90% or so, but I'll take those odds. The brabanters are AWESOME, such cute hair. I went for hardy, large egg layers that'll make a wide...

Yep, just put in my tentative order last night--you're psychic. I'm going to change it a bit, and can add anything you'd like. From Ideal: 5 Cream Brabanters (white eggs) **This is what's holding up the order, will probably be late march** 5 Cuckoo Marans 10 Easter Eggers 5 GL (going to...

Anyone know where I can find a cold hardy white egg layer (brabanter, rose comb brown leghorn, etc), a BLRW and Welsummer (or decent quality Marans)? I can't find a hatchery with all 3 in sexed pullets. ARgh. I don't want to do two orders and hope they arrive at the same time.

I was going to go with Meyers and get some Marans but they're not going to be available until at least May and I want my hens full grown before winter starts. So now I'm thinking about Welps, they have the biggest variety I've found. I'm so torn.... I want a brabanter from Ideal but think I'll...

Quote: Oh, I'm sorry to hear that! Do you know what got them? We've had coyote tracks all over our yard from the back woods lately. I think we have a pack living there. I'm still trying to decide if I have the heart to get birds that might get eaten! If you reorder in the spring, let...

I"ve been MIA for a few months but I'm back. Residing in beautiful, snowy Fitchburg. My flock got wiped out about 2 weeks ago, still deciding what to do for replacements. I have to wait until spring though to redo the run and coop door.
