I wonder how capons work as members of a flock? I.e. a flock with hens and a rooster.

Actually I'd like to learn about caponization. Are your capons bigger than the intact boys? Do they crow?

Here's an article on crooked toes: http://poultrykeeper.com/skeletal-and-muscular-disorders/crooked-toes Edited to add article on curled toes: http://poultrykeeper.com/skeletal-and-muscular-disorders/curled-toes I never knew there was a distinction between crooked and curled toes. Edited...

Some observations -- I'm fairly new to chicken breeding, not an expert by any means. Please keep that in mind. :-) Last week I pulled some eggs from my incubator for my good Silkie broody. Although all six had been in the incubator the same amount of time, two candled vigorous, two a bit...

I put 4 CL eggs shipped from Texas to Michigan under my Silkie broody and she hatched 3 out of 4. If you're confident in your broody, I'd recommend giving her a chance.

So "dry" dosn't mean no water at all, right? What's the lowest humidity you use in the incubator? Thanks!

Sounds like you have two very exciting breeds! What's up with the Cream Legbars? How do they look?

Mid-Michigan, historically cold winter with a good number of nights below 0 Fahrenheit. Uninsulated, well-ventilated coop. CL rooster worst hit, losing all points and part of blade. About half the hens with combs having very petite points lost the top millimeter of some of their points. The...

It's to prevent the Easter basket/pet chick thing, right? The local feed store here is really careful right before Easter; in general, though, they know who has chickens and will sell one or two chicks to them, no problem. (Buying 100 lbs of chicken feed is usually a clue.) :-)

It happens. I'm not sure how rare it is, but it has happened to at least two people on this thread (including me).

At this point, I'm guessing few people in North America have Cream Legbars without more-or-less significant faults. It's a really new breed here and breeders have only had time for a few generations of improvements. (That's what makes them fun!)

Thanks, Rinda. I really didn't know what to do. I can't wait till warmer weather when I can build some pens to separate Polly and Tina from the main flock with their main man Neo. If anyone knows how to blunt down spurs (although his are minimal), please let me know. :-) I think it's past time...

Question for you all. My CL hen Polly has a nasty gash on her back. I'm guessing it's from a clumsy rooster. If I knew how to do stitches, I would have stitched it up. I didn't trust myself to use superglue without ending up in the emergency room -- or a vet's office -- with a chicken glued to...

Is there a possibility of having a necropsy done? I wouldn't even know how to start, or if it's affordable. I'm really sorry.

I didn't know that extension cords could even go bad, except by being run over by a lawnmower. :-( Hugs.
