April has laid 16 eggs so far. She laid in October, but only stopped at 12, so whenever we find an egg its always a surprise
She'll be a year old in next month. We're lucky she decided to lay inside their coop this time
I think what you read was something to the extent of "only having 1 goose would be considered cruel" - geese dont need to be the same breed for company, having different types of geese together is okay.
2 geese or 2 ducks would have been best. If you didnt want them to breed, you could have...
I dont think that over-coddling will turn them into brats. Lots of people found this to be helpful https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/561849/geese-training#post_7245388 post # 19 is the best!
I'm impressed that he likes (tolerates? ) wearing bows!!! What a great gander!
We feel the same way!! I mean, they're so soft with all those feathers, I dont understand how they dont LOVE to be hugged Its so hard for my parents to settle for just a pat here and there
I have Chinese geese, so hoping that some African owners can jump in to answer your question, BUT with my guys, their knobs started showing around... I think 3 months? Just a small little bump. As far as color being an indicator of sex, I dont think Africans show sex-linked traits as goslings...
My goose has only layed twice (she'll be a year old in April) & both times not out in the open -the first time she layed was under some bushes, this second time, she's laying in a corner of their coop. Geese DO bury/ hide their eggs. Mine covers them up with pieces of grass.
not true . theyll eat whatever tastes good to them. If they encounter something they dont like, they'll usually avoid it in the future. But sometimes, theyll walk by a plant and rip off a leaf just for te heck of it. My geese prefer to eat grass and a few weeds here and there.
But it IS...
Will you only be getting one duckling? Im going to assume that you don't own other ducks at the moment - if this is the case, you may want to get a female goose, as males, being larger than ducks may pose a danger to them.
If you do already have other ducks, I would suggest getting 2 geese...
I think that's the way to go. My goose has laid 4 eggs so far, we've taken them each time. This last one she covered up so well, makes me feel bad for taking the eggs because its almost like she's thinking, if I hide it real well, it'll be here when I get back - poor thing. But I'm relieved to...
It takes 30 days of incubation for eggs to hatch. Winter temps also play a factor, goslings generally hatch in the spring, but some can hatch in late winter, just depends on how cold it is. Good luck!!
Ninya & Charlie have grown into a beautiful (and handsome) pair of geese. Congratulations on the eggs! Mine layed about 12 in October (I think it was Oct) and then stopped. I'm going to see if I can find how many eggs the breed usually lays in The Book of Geese - i think I remember seeing it...
